If the season ended to-day, the Leafs would not be in the playoffs. But, there's still 59 game to go so a lot could happen. New coach to-night, same players.

I know they're saving Andersen for a long playoff run but they might have to play him in some back to backs just to make the playoffs (wild card?)

Question is now will the Leafs win the cup with the new coach? Teams have done it in the past. St. Louis and Pittsburgh comes to mind.

If the season ended Jan 1st St Louis would be in last place last year. Dart thinks the playoffs starts in November. You should have started a thread will Leafs make the playoffs in November.

Leafs lost 6 in a row since Marner was injured and the team was in the midst of tanking to rid themselves of Babcock so Dart found it convenient to chime in here with a if playoffs starts today post. In November. Does he even know the season started in October? October is the month before November for those who can't read a calendar. We're still in mid Fall. Not even winter and playoffs starts in April. Yes, that's Spring.

Start the parade now! Just kidding!

St. Louis is an anomaly. I don't have hard stats but I think many more teams haven't won the Cup after changing coaches mid-stream. Time will tell. (Leafs are still allowing more than 30 SOG's in the 2 wins.)

Brian Burke on Tim & Sid (or is it Sid & Tim?) last night was very pessimistic about the Leaf's chances.

Sure, there are still 52 games left but it is possible that things could actually get worse and not better. They currently have 30 points, they probably need at least 90 pr more to even make wild card.

They need to win two thirds of their remaining games to make the playoffs. Tall order

If you look at the Atlantic only 1 team is running away with it. Just have to finish in the top 3 in the division and you have a playoff spot. The Atlantic division is wide open. There are 4 or 5 teams in the same bubble: Florida, Tampa, Buffalo, Toronto, Montreal. So don't be surprised if 90 points would be enough to make the playoffs. Unless Dubas and Shanny are secretly tanking the season to get Alexis Lefreniere? The Leafs are lottery protected for the top 10 pick.

That is the trump card we have: the Leafs play in the Atlantic division where everyone is shitting the bed just as badly except for Boston.

Leafs could totally moonwalk their way into a third place playoff spot just like they did last year.

They might only miss the playoffs if Montreal/Florida/Buffalo find a way to somehow stop their bleeding.

The concern should be how they're playing rather than whether they'll make the playoffs. Everything falls into place when you have your shit together.
Personally, I feel that if the Leafs don't improve considerably, they're better off missing the playoffs this year.
They need a serious wakeup call from top to bottom.

This is such a ridiculously stupid question that only someone who knows nothing about hockey would ask.
A more interesting and intelligent question would have been can the Leafs get out of the first round and beat Boston.

Leafs made the playoffs last year. Throughout the year they were one of the top teams until they took a dip late in the season and having to play Holl on defense.
Leafs got rid of dead weight. They don't have a Nylander on holdout. They got rid of Sparks. Young core players are 1 year stronger and more experienced. They no longer have players in their late 30's. Spezza hasn't made the team yet. Gauthier looked better in their first exhibition game. The team overall should be better this year so yes whether they make the playoffs is a ridiculously stupid question.

The only reason they would miss the playoffs is due to injuries to key players. Which is what happened to Tampa Bay 2 years ago.

I would say without Gardiner they will beat Boston this year in 7 games and enter unchartered territory into round 2.

They are second overall behind only Tampa Bay as odds on favourite in Vegas to win it all. That alone already answers the question what people think about Leafs making the playoffs.
So this is my idea of the maple leafs fan , they tell everybody that they don’t know anything about hockey and they know all lol , you are fucking laughable bro the leafs are complete trash . I will bet a weeks wages they don’t make the playoffs and I think it looks good on them . Second highest ticket price in the league haven’t won a playoff series in what 15 years now lmfao

I tend to ignore that member. All or almost all of his posts are simply trash.

Below is another of his "words of wisdom". He doesn't realize what the Leafs do in October, November and December affects whether or not they make the playoffs in April.

"In November. Does he even know the season started in October? October is the month before November for those who can't read a calendar. We're still in mid Fall. Not even winter and playoffs starts in April. Yes, that's Spring."

The crazy thing is the Leafs have time figure their shit out.

Still 43 games to go. It will come down the games 80, 81 or 82. Looks like Boston is running away with it in the Atlantic so there are 5 teams in the bubble, Leafs, Lightning, Habs, Panthers, Sabres.

The balance of the power was in the Atlantic the past few years. This year it shifted to the Metro with both wildcards probably going to that division.
That would make it tougher in the Atlantic as it'll be a race for 3 spots and Boston likely to take one of them. That leaves the 5 teams you mentioned for 2 spots with an outside chance to take a wild card for 3 spots. 5 teams for 2 spots is a bigger fight than 5 teams for 3 spots. Toronto right now is leading this group of 5 based on points per game.

Considering the start they had with a rough schedule of back to backs, Backups being bad, bad coaching, injuries to Hyman, Dermott, Tavaras, and Marner, they are in a good spot right now to be in the thick of it. Hyman, Tavaras, and Marner was their top line last year. Playoffs don't start in December. They certainly don't start in November!!!
Edmonton might not make the playoffs even with the wild start they had.

Both Burke and Friedman picked Leafs as the Canadian team to finish with the most points this season.
Burke picks Calgary second.
