They’re not banning prisons, they’re banning private for-profit prisons, which they should be doing, because private prisons have been a cancer on the American justice system for decades. Also, just on a personal level, I feel that it’s extremely unethical to profit off of human misery like that.

Misery that 99% of those inmates caused themselves. Just sayin'

The “3 strikes you’re out” rule means some are serving life sentences for non-violent crimes. No longer a land of the free.

Yeah, this is the problem. Lobby groups push for tougher sentencing, mandatory minimums, 3 strike laws, etc., because for-profit prisons exist, and packing people into prisons means dollar signs. Now, I have no sympathy for actual criminals, if someone’s a murderer or a rapist or whatever, fuck ‘em, throw ‘em in a hole, but there are a lot of people who get screwed by the system and wind up serving ridiculous sentences for very minor crimes. There are people serving life sentences for selling marijuana, which is now legal in many states. That’s an absolute travesty.

This is why banning for-profit prisons is good. Not because I have sympathy for criminals, but because the system is corrupt and will never be functional as long as people are making money off of it.

Ridiculous sentences for very minor offenses? Take 2 minutes looking up the law before spewing out bullshit

So there are no people in the U.S. serving long sentences for selling marijuana or simple possession? Ok.
