Netanyahu’s Facebook page suspended over hate speech

Israeli president blames staffer for post about murderous Arabs

Zamira Rahim @ZamiraRahim

Facebook has sanctioned Benjamin Netanyahu’s official page, after a post called on voters to oppose a government composed of “Arabs who want to destroy us all – women, children and men.”

The social media company said the post violated its hate speech policy.

Facebook consequently disabled the page’s automatic chat function for 24 hours.

The Israeli prime minister has denied writing the post.

In an interview with Kan Reshet Bet radio, Mr Netanyahu suggested that a staffer’s mistake was responsible.

The right-wing president is campaigning to retain his office in an election next week.

The 69-year-old has attempted to ensure nationalist support by using hardline rhetoric.

On Tuesday Mr Netanyahu pledged to annex the Jordan Valley, which is part of the occupied West Bank.

Annexation would be illegal under international law but Mr Netanyahu asked the voters to provide him with a “mandate” for annexation in the election.

Mr Netanyahu’s right wing Likud party faces tough competition from the centre-right Blue and White Party.

The Israeli prime minister emerged victorious in a 9 April election but failed to win enough seats in the Knesset, Israel’s parliament, to build a government.

He dissolved the legislature for a second time in six months, triggering another election which will be held on 17 September.

If he's posting hate speech, he should be banned just like anyone else.

I'd have to see the exact post in context. Dovetailing our conversatiion about other social media bannings, I don't want Facebook refereeing speech in Israel no matter who it upsets.

You do know that's not true. Look around you. Your ISP cannot keep you from accessing TERB. Although that is in doubt here in the U.S.

Facebook currently has the privilege to discriminate speech, but there is no right to do as such.

I mentioned this on another thread, but why can't the Colorado baker decide not to make a custom cake for a gay wedding due to his religious beliefs? Because society has decided that this would discriminate against a class of citizens and religious beliefs does not make it permissible. But somehow political belief makes it permissible for Facebook to arbitrate and censor other's political views.

So the Baker has decided to make the cake? Or is he bowing to the pressure of the markets?

The right wing is the pro-business party that would let corporations do whatever they wanted to, if they could. Now the shoe is on the other foot, you suddenly stop hear the business rights arguments.

You make a valid, but esoteric point. Some of us here are very consistent and well versed in our interpretation of the law. We have no interest in supporting or defeating big businesses.

From what I've seen, the right wingers are not very principled. They do not care for everyone's right, but only for their own.

Netanyahu was in Russia meeting up with Putin. There is one and only one reason why he did so. Just to benefit himself in the forthcoming elections.

Also, he plans to annex parts of The West Bank if he is re-elected.

So in your opinion if I'm a bakery owner I shouldnt have to bake cakes for gay people when they wanna get married then??
Or what about if a BLM member wants to buy a cake, can I refuse them as well (based on the fact they hate the police)??

EDIT: WyattEarp beat me to it

You're just worried that terb might some day take a stand on Islamophobics, like FB and twitter now do.

Netanyahu is in the news for surrounding the white house with stingrays, to monitor Trump et al's cell phone use.
Trump of course, is ok with being spied on.

Some left wingers want to shut down opposing speech and views whether it be on campuses, in institutions and in politics.

I agree with you to some extent. Some Republicans embrace libertarian views, traditional views, security and order depending on how it fits their viewpoint on a specific issue.

As long as they are consistent about both extremes, I have no issue with them deciding who and what is allowed on their platform.

....
At least under Canadian law, you are prohibited from discriminating based on grounds covered in our charter. Racism and incitement are not included in those criteria.

And so do many right wingers who act like people criticizing them is somehow a denial of their freedom of speech.

The thread is about Facebook suspending accounts which is more than criticism. I guess this would help if you cited examples. You're probably right though.

Yes there is a regressive left. But I see way more hypocrisy from the status quo on the right.
