On the slopes of Mount Parnassus, Greece
INDIANAPOLIS — Indianapolis Colts quarterback Andrew Luck is retiring from the NFL.

"I'm going to retire, this is not an easy decision," Luck said after the Colts' preseason loss to the Chicago Bears on Saturday. "This is the hardest decision of my life. But it is the right decision for me."

Luck fought back tears as he explained his decision. "(The injuries have) taken my joy of this game away. I've been stuck in this process, haven't been able to live the life I want to live. After 2016, I played in pain and was unable to practice, I said I wouldn't go through that again.

"It's sad, but I also have a lot of clarity in this. Difficult process. My wife, family, friends, Chris Ballard, Mr. Irsay, Frank Reich have been incredibly supportive. Thankful for them."

Luck, the 29-year-old who was the NFL’s Comeback Player of the Year last season, has been battling an injury to his left leg, an injury that was initially described as a calf strain and described as a high ankle issue. No indication has been given that Luck was contemplating retirement.

"It was an honor to represent the city of Indianapolis on and off the field," Luck said. "So grateful to have been drafted here. Can't fathom another owner how loves his team as much as (Irsay does) ...

"This has been an incredible place to make a home and grow. This city will always hold a special place in my heart."

Professional football (unlike billiard, cards, chess or even tennis) takes an awful toll on one's body. He probably already has more money than he needs.

Yes, yes, I know Shack will disagree with me. He always does.

I remember hearing a player say playing football is like being in a car accident every 30 seconds. Average career is around 4-5 years.

Andrew LUCK is a pusssay!

Just kidding, American football is crazy. Wish him luck and enjoy getting paid as a NFL broadcaster.
The guys being drafted now these days are freaks of nature.... ie...6'5" 370 Lbs athletes at 21y.o.

Toughness is an individual quality. The physical toll of those two sports seems comparable to me.

NFL is the toughest North American sport, but Australian Rules Football and International Rugby is by far tougher on the body.

There's a story out today that reports the Colts aren't going to attempt to recoup any of the bonus money they could have got back. Great move on their part! As a lifelong Colts fan I hate to see Luck's career end like this. But Andrew Luck is as classy as they come and wish him the best of luck

Dont follow NFL closely but seems the players are bigger and hits are harder over time. Amount of CTE in players is just being discovered. Kudos to him for putting his body and long term health first.

I think Andrew should have a conversation with Tom Brady. Apparently, Gisele wants Tom to retire but I think he is intent on building his legacy as the GOAT. Remember you have only one brain or you will not remember you have only one brain.

He's not retiring due to anything concussion related.

Exactly, why risk a concussion on top of all the other injuries he has already suffered.

At age 41, Tom Brady should listen to his wife. What more does he have to prove? Get out before a concussion gets you first.

Of course Brady doesn't have anything to prove, except maybe to himself. But Tom like a lot of other elite athletes that don't have anything to prove (Sidney Crosby, Aaron Rodgers, Ovechkin, Drew Brees come to mind) plays for the love of the game and because he excels at it, among other things. The risk of head injury in most cases will not stop these guys from playing a sport they love.

Maybe just Gisele and me but he is 41 years old in a young man's sport. He has a family to think of as well. He is also in a game where getting hit often by big humans is routine.

Another NFL star who retired "early" is Barry Sanders.

Anyway, I said my piece (before Shack and his BFF jump in).

To play in the NFL you have to be both physically and mentally available to be able to play the game at a high level. Andrew Luck has had quite a few different injuries over the last few years and it has not only taken a toll on him physically but it has also taken a toll on him mentally.

The Colts could recoup up to the $24.8M roster and signing bonus back from him because they think he might take a year off and come back, and if he does they would want him back playing in Indianapolis. But I don't think Luck is coming back ever he is physically and mentally drained and has checked out.

The Colts wont attempt to challenge the bonus money, their medical staff is a joke. And Luck has the evidence of them playing fast and loose with his health. Too many franchises do this and more players are going to retire young.
