Trump says Jewish Americans who vote Democrat show "great disloyalty"

President Trump told reporters in the Oval Office Tuesday that he didn't "buy" the tears from Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-Mich.) at a recent press conferenceaddressing Israel's decision to bar entry to her and Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.), adding that Jewish Americans who vote for Democrats show either "a total lack of knowledge or great disloyalty."

"I can't even believe that we're having this conversation. Five years ago, the concept of even talking about this, even 3 years ago, of cutting off aid to Israel because of 2 people that hate Israel and hate Jewish people. I can't believe we're even having this conversation. Where has the Democratic Party gone? Where have they gone where they're defending these 2 people over the state of Israel? I think that any Jewish people that vote for a Democrat, I think it shows either a total lack of knowledge or great disloyalty."

Why it matters: 79% of Jewish Americans voted for Democrats in the 2018 midterms, according to Pew Research Center.

Driving the news: Following pressure from President Trump, Reps. Omar and Tlaib were barred by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu from visiting Israel last week over their support for the BDS movement, which advocates a boycott of the state of Israel for its government's treatment of Palestinians. Trump publicly encouraged the ban on Twitter, saying that the congresswomen "hate Israel & all Jewish people, & there is nothing that can be said or done to change their minds."

Flashback: Trump told RNC donors in March that "the Democrats hate Jewish people," referring to the controversy over Omar's past comments about Israel.

Republicans and some Democrats accused Omar of exploiting an anti-Semitic stereotype that Jewish Americans hold a "dual loyalty" to a foreign country. Omar "unequivocally" apologized for the comments.

It's unclear to whom Trump thinks Jewish Americans who vote Democrat are "disloyal" — but his comments have prompted accusations that he's exploiting the same anti-Semitic "dual loyalty" trope that Omar apologized for in February.

In the same breath he called himself "The King of Israel" and "The Second Coming of God":

Such a dumb idiot. The only "Coming" would be "Cumming" and the hush Money to pay for it.

Then he "joked" about awarding himself "The Medal of Honour":

But we know about his history of Bone Spurs and his college excuses:

Trump never served in the military and was granted five draft deferments — four for college and one for bone spurs in his heel.

I didn't like that he said that.

I would prefer both parties get away from this idea that certain groups need to vote en masse for one party or another. Most Jewish-Americans don't seem to me to be greatly influenced politically by our Israel policy.

Jewish voters are yellow dog democrats, and are less than 2% of the US population. The target for this are Evangelical voters who are more pro-Israel than Jewish voters.

Very true. The American Jewish population is too small to be of any use in the general election. And Jewish people tend to be more liberal than the general population, anyway. Although that is slowly changing.

I thought that too. However, if you start thinking about Trump's margin of victories in the industrial heartland this bloc becomes more important. I would also guess that the Jewish population has a higher propensity to be registered and turnout than the the average for the electorate.

The state to watch is Florida. Without any deep research on my part, it is likely that Florida Jews are older on average and possibly more supportive of Israel. The statewide races down there have been razor thin victories for Republicans. Of course, they're still counting. ;)

Of course the Jewish population in America is pretty much in the big cities, with the NY state being the major center. No danger of Trump winning there. The older Jewish Americans tend to be more pragmatic and even in Florida they're mostly concentrated in the Boca and Miami areas. The difference, this time, is that the right wing antisemitism is confined to the crazy fringe. However, the lefty antisemitism has made it all the way to the Hill with the Democrats. And to the NYT. There will be lots of Jews scratching their yarmulkes in the voting boths next year.
