Bianca has withdrawn from the Cincinnati Open.

I didn't expect her to win the Rogers Cup, I just wanted her to get match fit. Lovely Virginie Tremblay is earning her money. Technically she's employed by Tennis Canada, she has many clients including FAA. With the money she's expected to earn, she can afford to hire her full time. The minor disappointment of the Rogers Cup, Canadian cameramen didn't luxuriate over her like their American and Australian counterparts.

Sylvain Bruneau is Bianca's coach now, he wasn't at Auckland.

Milos has withdrawn from the U.S. open due to a glute injury. Bummer. And since Shapo plays F.A.A. in the first round, that means only one Canadian man will advance in the tournament. Hopefully Bianca can make a long run to keep Canadian hopes alive.

So you believe Pospisil and Schnur shouldn't even show up for their matches? Come on man

After her outstanding opening round match vs Bianca at the Roger's Cup, Genie has won her qualification to enter the main draw at Flushing Meadows. The arrival of Bianca has motivated her to get it together. Even though she puts bums in the seats, the USTA were not going to give her a wildcard.

The pairing of FAA and Shapo would not have happened if FAA had won his opening round match in Cincinnati.

Genie Bouchard's ability to draw a crowd remains undimmed, standing room only at the outer court she's playing at.

Unfortunately she's going against the tough 12th seed Anastasia Sevastova. She fighting hard but her serve is letting her down again. She will improve, she's now training exclusively with Tennis Canada...with Virginie Tremblay in her corner.

As a Tennis Canada trainer, Virginie Tremblay is bound to work with any tennis player who asks for her assistance. She couldn't refuse Genie, that would have been a dereliction of duty.

That may change depending on how Bianca does at the US Open.

Lovely Simona Halep is in tough against Nicole Gibbs.

I love Simona Halep. Not only is she a great tennis player, she'd be loads of fun to spend the night with. She's going against Nicole Gibbs, who got in as a lucky loser and she's a cancer survivor. She had a tumour removed from her left cheekbone, you can see that scar on her face. It's great to see her compete again, the alternative I don't want to think about.

Shapo vs FAA at 5:15pm.

Impressive win by world #216 Pospisil over #9 seed Khachanov in 5 sets. Go figure.

Vasek did what FAA couldn't at the Rogers Cup. FAA played some of his best tennis against Khacha but the Russian took it one step further. I figured Vasek would go out in straight sets, I only watched the last two. Pospisil managed to get him off his game by serving like a champion and building up Khacha's unforced errors. Whenever Khacha went to the set, Pospisil had an answer.

Did Khacha destroy FAA's confidence? Felix had no answer to what the new and improved Shapo was giving, he went out in straight sets. Shapovalov has added muscle in 2019, he dropped in the rankings while adjusting to clay and grass. After the Rogers Cup Tessa Shapovalova relinquished control, Shapo got his first professional coach in Mikhail Youzhny. Obviously he's had an effect! Shapo is no longer playing to the crowd, he's playing to win. His first serve looks like Milos...he still needs work on his second. He's stopped over swinging, cutting down his unforced errors substantially. His groundstrokes have real power, FAA was constantly on his heels. Patrick McEnroe said he'll be the one to bust up The Big Three.

I didn't watch Bianca, the Portuguese Lothario said she didn't even break a sweat.

Have you seen Anna Kalinskaya, the 20 year old Russian who waxed Sloan’s Stephens last night? She’ s gorgeous. Also congrats to Vasek Pospisil, I didn’t think he had a chance against Khachanov, not because he doesn’t have the ability, just because I thought his lay-off from the back injury would rule him out.

Brayden Schnur had the toughest time of all, Benoit Paire is woefully under ranked. I doubt Vasek would have done the job either.

Anna Kalinskaya, never heard of her - nice! Still, Bianca su tutti.

The Tennis Federation is breaking its own rules with Coco Gauff. The tier system was set up so that young players can compete with their age group and not be overwhelmed by the lifestyle when they turn pro. Jennifer Capriati and Martina Hingis turned to drugs. When you're being pressured by the Americans all is fair. Which it isn't 16 year old Canadian Leylah Fernandez was in tears after getting waxed by Bouzkova at the Rogers Cup. They thought she could handle the pressure after winning the French Open Jr's Title.

Bouzkova was also a Jr's Champion but she's four year older than Fernandez....the still makes me feel dirty.

Tommorow:

Bianca vs Caroline Wozniacki
Shapo vs Gael Monfils

Neither has been tested so far, it's going to be different on Saturday. Shapo hit 11 Aces against Laaksonen but also 6 double faults, he's taking that risk to score winners. Now he goes up against the crafty Frenchman, let's see if the proper coaching he's getting holds up. Bianca beat Wozniacki in New Zealand, she'll be out for vengeance. Her only chance is to be accurate at the net, if she exchanges groundstrokes she's going to get eaten.

Finally Vasik Pospisil had his Iron Maiden moment. He fought Tennys Sandgren (whom I know nothing about) hard, he fought him well but in the end he couldn't give him hell.

The over-rated Dominic Thiem got knocked out in the first round by a 5' 8" Italian.

I see that Lovely Nick Kyrgios is being his usual bubbly self again...that Endicott dream will be forever burned into my mind!

I saw some of that match the other night. Kyrgios was raining down first serves at 140 mph + at times. Johnson couldn't touch it. But Nick was once again up to some crazy antics. Apparently him and Johnson are pretty good friends off the court - Johnson though was pretty pissed by the end. He's well on his way to it but hopefully Nick doesn't get to the point where he has everybody pissed off.

The old Monfils would have lost to Shapo, romance agrees with him. The Frenchman has always been a crowd pleaser but was to undisciplined to go deep. He's into a developing relationship with Elina Svitolina, she's been good for him. Shapo showed moxy by rallying to take the tie-breaker in the 4th set but Monfils was determined. The difference between Shapo and Bianca: When Shapo has his serve broken it takes him awhile to recover, when Bianca has her serve broken it doesn't stay broken.

Monfils better enjoy the moment, this will be the last time he beats Shapo.

Better luck in Australia.

McEnroe was entertaining for the same reason. A firey tennis player. As a commentator totally different persona. But antics may be correct. A ploy to get his opponent rattled.

Not sure if you witnessed him in real time back then, but I don't think that it was ever a ploy. It was his true personality.
