The great American League lefthander Don Mossi, one of my childhood heroes, died yesterday at the age of 90. Unfortunately, he suffered through dementia the last few years. He pitched 12 seasons in the big leagues compiling a 101-80 record with a 3.43 ERA.

Don was signed out of high school by the Cleveland Indians and laboured in the minors for five years until he was called up in 1954 by the club. He went to the World Series that year with the Indians where they were swept by Willie Mays and the New York Giants, in spite of having a pitching rotation that included Mike Garcia, Bob Feller, Early Wynn and Hal Newhouser, all Hall of Fame pitchers. Don pitched in all four games and allowed no runs. That year, the Indians were 111-43, a .721 percentage that has not been equalled since.

In 1958 he was traded to the Detroit Tigers for Billy Martin and Al Cicotte. He had his career year in 1961 when he was 15-7 with a 2.96 ERA. Yours truly was entranced by his year. In fact, the 1961 Tigers were a super team that finished second to the first place Yankees although they won 101 games that year. Mossi suffered arm problems shortly thereafter. In those days, that was a death knell to one's career, and he retired in 1965 after short stints with the White Sox and Kansas City As.

During his career, Mossi was voted the ugliest player in the major leagues, although the majors in the 50's consisted of only 16 teams.

RIP Don Mossi.
