StatsCan says the overall violent crime rate was1.09% in 2017 (1,098.4 per 100,000) and of course the crimes of the mentally ill are already counted in that total*. It's hardly surprising that many violent people are mentally ill, would mentally healthy people do things that attract cops and punishment?Probably still feel better than being slash/hit with a meat cleaver 45 times.
I think there was a post by a member a while back that said "only" 4% of mentally ill people are violent. That is still at least 2, 3 or 4 times higher than the rate in the general population.

* By my arithmetic, using StatsCans self-reported mental or substance abuse issues numbers of 10.1% of the general population and that 4%, something like 400 of those violent crimes would have been committed by people with mental health problems. But we have no way of knowing that, there's no numbers for violent crimes committed by ordinary rational folks just like me and you.
And sometimes I wonder about you.
