What is the shelf life of a Rogers box? Mine is a bit over 10 years old.

I would give it another year and you will start seeing issues.

Rogers is eliminating their ”digital cable” packages in about 6-12months. No new signups for digital cable will be allowed. They are pushing everyone to internet based TV since it is cheaper to maintain the infrastructure. I think this will also get around their required $25 cable package. CTRC made no rules about none digital cable Tv.

Also, Rogers get to get more money from you because you have to their internet to go with it.

Just some insider FYI.

Oh and if you want to watch Crave or ignite TV anywhere, just a heads up it also needs to be on a rogers internet network. So no game.of thrones at your local Timmies as that is a Bell network.

Get these movie/Tv subscriptions directly from the carrier, not Rogers if you want them to work outside of your home or a Rogers internet network.

Thanks. By no new signups, does that mean existing customers like me will still get digital cable TV service?

You will for a time. How long I don't know. Maybe an additional year after the sign-ups stop. They will need to give notice. How much notice, I don't know.

My guess - 2 years.

Thank you for the heads up. I still like the convenience of a digital box and all the PVRing I do.

As for the boxes themselves.....All their HD boxes and 2.0 PVRs are all at cycle's end and will be breaking down or are already dead. 3.0 PVRs are a lot better.

I have Ignite at my new place and I like it for the most part, but they really need to prioritize expanding their channel lineup. Seems like a bunch of channels aren’t available to me anymore. Also, no adult channels on Ignite. I kind of wanted to order a few of the porn channels, because why not, but they’re not available on Ignite. Kinda sucks.

Some stations will only work on a Rogers network as well because of location licensing. Like Fox. It will only work on a Rogers internet or data network.

It still has lots of bugs. I'm sure in a few years it will be much better but at this point, I would suggest to anyone to keep their existing digital cable.

That doesn't sound right. I've got Bell at my office, Cogeco at my cottage and I can watch Ignite TV at both locations on Wi-Fi.

Well, I’m sort of stuck with it for now. I have multiple TVs now, so using digital would require a bunch of drilling and running cables, and I just got done with a major renovation, don’t want to be doing that now. I’m fine with it overall, it works well and I have all the channels I typically watch regularly. Mostly just bummed about the adult channels. From what I saw when I googled it, it seems like they don’t plan on offering them since everyone tends to get their “adult content” online. Not a huge deal, but it’d have been fun to have.

Only the apps works. The web portal does not. Not on all networks and not in all locations. It is a known bug by Rogers. It does not work on a Bell network in Peterborough for example.

And Crave will not work at all without being on a Rogers network. Again, the web portal. Not the app. I switched to direct subscription to crave because of this issue. It now works on any network.

I should have been more clear.

Back to the original question...

If your box was virgin when you got it and it's still working 10 years later, you're very lucky. If your box was used when you got it, you hit the fucking lottery.

Cable boxes are just shells surrounding a hard drive. And Rogers isn't buying top end hard drives. A good hard drive is supposed to last 5-7 years tops. Anything after that is gravy. A shitty hard drive will last you 3-5 years tops.

My old Rogers box lasted a solid 10 years without any problems whatsoever (it was virgin when I got it). Nowadays if you're renting a box it's highly likely to be used, and that means problems. I went through 3 (!!) boxes back to back to back when I upgraded, literally exchanging two of them on Day 1 and got the third on Day 2. Quality is crap on used boxes (that's usually why people turn them in).

If you buy the box outright make damn sure it's a brand new box, unused. Don't be fooled by the plastic wrap, they put that on every box. You want them to confirm that it's brand new (I'd make them write that on the receipt) and inspect it when you buy it for any signs of use. Don't trust a word they say. Verify everything.

If you have a box that's lasted 10 years you're due for a failure. So consider yourself on borrowed time and/or make sure there's nothing on it you couldn't live without.

I like hard wired for everything. It's faster, more dependable and just plain better.

And the new "Ignite" system is all wireless. So I would probably avoid it.

Bell's fibe system can be wireless, or can operate over a CAT6 cable. So I have opted to go with Bell.

I honestly would probably switch to Bell, but I made the mistake of using my Rogers email address as my main/business email, been using it for at least 20 years now, so I’m sort of married to it. No way to transfer it to a different service as far as I can find. I have so many important contacts, hundreds of accounts on various sites, some of which can’t be changed to different emails, etc. It’d be an absolute mess if I lost that account.

I will say, I’ve found Ignite quite dependable so far and more than fast enough. I do a lot of gaming, especially a lot of fast, twitchy games, haven’t had any issues yet. I used to play on a wired connection, so I was a bit worried about using wifi to game, but it’s been completely fine thus far.

As more and more people move to the 4K cable box, more and more of the older 2K cable boxe are now available. I got two free 2K cable boxes, one from a neighbor and one from a friend the past few months. I used one for my downstair TV and keeping the other one as a spare.

I had the same concern when I thought Yahoo was going bankrupt or that Verizon would get rid of Yahoo mail after the takeover of Yahoo.

BTW: If you ever close a bank account, you will not be able to access your banking information.
