Ok, I'll just say Ontario.
Hey isn't there a scam involving loaded Presto Cards? I think it goes something like this. You meet an individual who offers to sell you a Presto card with a value of, let's just say, $250. This individual offers to sell it to you for $200 because he no longer needs to use public transit. Maybe he bought a car or something. The seller takes the buyer to a Presto machine and sure enough, there's $250 on this card. The buyer happily pays the seller $200 and is thrilled to be saving $50. The buyer and seller part ways. The seller then logs into his Presto account which still has the $250 assigned to it and transfer the money to another Presto account. The buyer realizes he was scammed the first time he tries to use his Presto card.

As if going to a transit station, Shoppers Drug Mart, etc. or opening the Presto website is too much work for some people?

if you go to a presto machine at a TTC station, the card will show as registered or unregistered. You can create an account without a card, once you verify the card is unregistered, log into the mobile app, and plunk the card in before handing over the money.. they can't then try to steal the balance.

Remember possession is 9/10ths of the law. Once you register it, Metrolinx says it is yours.

Obviously if the card shows registered, walk away.

The OP did say "unregistered". So, the acid test is to put the card in the Presto machine and check.

Question: Why did you write "Steve" at the end of your post?

Apparently, there is a scam where adults are using kiddie Presto cards. It seems the scanner can't tell if you are an adult or a kid.

No, but anyone listening to the beebs the reader makes on the buses or subway can, there is a distinct tone for regular adult fare, one for student/senior discounts, and one for children. The operators know also by the tones, but are instructed not to interfere. Saw the fare inspectors checking everyone (both in and out) at Bloor Yonge couple weeks ago - asked one how many they were catching, he said one every couple of minutes - card confiscation and $425 fine need a lot of rides saving the $3.10 to have paid for that...lol

Interesting, but you still need a human fare inspector to determine that the 6'3" bearded dude is not a kid.

Why go through the trouble of checking if the OP's Presto card is legit at a Presto machine at the station, logging into the web-site, etc.? Just buy the card at the machine, Shoppers, etc and you will know with total certainty that it's legit.
