A very high level of tennis throughout, except for a weak 2nd set by Djokovic.

Maybe it is the nature of his game but Roger seemed to make a number of unforced errors/mishits. The other thing I saw was that there were a number of times where Roger had an open side to hit to and make Novak run, but continually hit it back to Novak's side. Maybe he was trying to wrong foot him but it did not seem to work.

Regardless, it was a classic match. Glad I saw it.
Yeah I noticed that business of Roger having an open side to hit to and not doing it, as well. It baffled me as on a couple of occasions he could easily of won the point by doing so. As you say maybe he was trying to wrong foot him (and get another fall out of him) :) He'll also rue two sitting, mid-court forehands that he didn't put away in the first set tiebreaker. And of course failing to convert while serving for the match at 40-15 in the fifth. Oh well, que sera sera. I don't think we've seen the last of Roger contending at majors yet - he's looked too good physically these past few months. It's just a question of whether psychologically he wants to keep putting in the work.

Btw in relation to the different court speed with a different grass - the reason I brought it up was because I heard them (McEnroe I think) talk about it earlier in the week. I hadn't heard this previously. It never occurred to me that different grasses could result in different court speeds (though I've been well aware of it with hard courts for years as its been commented on forever). I just found it hard to understand how grass, especially being that short, could affect the speed and thought that someone might have some insight into why it does.

That final was amazing. Federer is 37 and was able to play at a high level to the end. Kudos to him. He's a machine.

Roger is the GOAT
I still pick Rod Laver. He won two Grand Slams 6 years apart but he was banned from playing for the 5 years in between. Roger, who I love, has no Grand Slams. So it is debatable.

GOAT is always debatable. I' think the best tennis players were banned when Laver won his first Grand Slam. Laver also never had to face the likes of Nadal and Djovokic.

I agree that it is debatable as opposed to those who unequivocally declare Roger the GOAT. IMO, they do not understand or appreciate tennis in a historical perspective.

True, the Rocket never faced Nadal or Novak. He faced Newcombe, Roche, Emerson, Stolle, Ashe, Pancho Gonzales, Lou Hoad, Ken Rosewall who are all Hall of Famers. The point is that he dominated his era more so than Roger dominated his era. One could argue that Laver's era was deeper than Roger's. Who other than Nadal and Novak are Hall of Famers from this current era?

There are probably no other HOFers. The "Big 3" (the law firm of Federer, Djokovic & Nadal) have killed all the pretenders. According to legend there is room for only 3 kings. LOL!

I think Andy Murray and Stan Wawrinka will make it to the Hall of Fame.

Nah the whole deal was different with pros and amateurs being seperate at the time.

The whole formula was different back then as I only slightly understand it. Players were cataogorized into pro and am so its not likely that Rod Laver always had to face the best...Roswall was not eligable to play as he was pro etc etc.

Federer had that game - 2 match points on serve after breaking Novak after 8 games in the final set. Novak got 4 straight points to save that game. 3 were given away by Roger. I knew if it went to to tie break Novak would take it.
Cannot believe he was not able to serve it out. And he was serving amazing through most of the game, then could not buy a freakin first serve..unreal.

Yet nobody else won a Grand Slam (save Don Budge in 1938) let alone do it twice like Laver did. So it could not have been so easy. He lost 6 years of his prime. Hard to say how many more majors he would have had. 10 more would be a conservative guess.

As well, he has 200 singles titles (a record) and won at least 10 tournaments a year for 7 consecutive years.

I think Ken Rosewall holds the current record for oldest male player to ever make the finals of a Slam. (Rosewall is a natural right-hander who plays tennis left-handed.) Federer has a chance to tie or break his record.
