Can someone explain exactly how the NBA salary cap works.

The talking heads in USA are saying that the Raptors should just send their NBA Title to the LA Lakers and save themselves the trouble of defending it in 2020. Amid the hype, Herschel Slatsky (The King of all speculators) is saying that the Lakers pulled a Herschel Walker, They wont have enough bench strength to even make the playoffs if LBJ or AD gets injured. I figured that the Lakers will splash the cash, Real Madrid style and buy themselves a Championship. It was done before with the Magic and Golden State. Mr Slatsky pointed out that the Raptors spent more money on their Raptors 905 than any other team, Kawhi is just the jewel in the crown.

I could look it up but I'll allow my intrepid fellow posters to weigh in. And as for the Lakers as automatic NBA Champions in 2020....if he stays.

NBA is soft cap system. NBA teams can spend over it. If they do, they pay luxury tax. There are other penalties like, not allowed to sign and trade players. There are exceptions like Bird rights. I wish the NHL had a soft cap system. The Leafs can spend, spend, spend. MLSE can pay the luxury tax and still make a profit.

Actually the NBA has soft cap with almost a hard cap to it. You can go over the cap, and pay the luxury tax, but at a certain point it becomes almost impossible to spend more. Unlike the MLB, it's a true soft cap. They can spend as much as they want and just pay dollar for dollar in luxury tax after they're over the cap.

I like the NHL to have a soft cap system. They spend over the cap but get luxury taxed, also penalized by not allowing them to trade, cannot sign new players, cannot buy out, forfeit a 2nd round draft pick, etc.
