Thread: Maple Leafs - 2019-20

Can I remind everyone again that Marner played on a line with Tavares as his centreman.
If Marner cannot accept that he will not share the same status as Matthews on this team,
better that Leafs make a deal for him and they part ways right now.

Hey Dart, Matthews gets injured more than Marner cause he is bigger

It's more than fair. Marner's looking like a greedy kid for turning that down. I'd imagine he's looking for a shorter term but probably still too much money. Marner ain't winning this PR campaign.

They don't like the length of the deal. The reason being the cap will be going up faster over the next few years (its been artificially suppressed the past few years). I'm getting the feeling they are only going to sign him to a 1 year deal and work on something more long term.

1 year deal won't make sense. Anyways news has it the Leafs and Marner are getting closer to a deal. Most likely 5 years.

Marner has agreed to a 6 year deal, $65.36 million.

    I'll bet you he won't.

You were right. It’s not $11m for 5 years.
    Just $10.893 x 6 years.
I guess that amounts to the home town discount in Leaf land. Kinda.

In 3 or 4 years, when elite players are signing contracts for $15 mil a year, Marner’s deal will look quite reasonable.

For a guy who disappeared last playoffs, 4 points in 7 games. Now they can get on with naming Matthews captain.

    Nylander's will look ultra-rreasonable.

You mean like when he sacrificed his body to block 2 hard shots in the last few seconds of the game to preserve the win?

He's nowhere close to being an elite player. He has to at least match his best season 20g/61pts to make his contract looks decent.

Was he referring to making the playoffs or hosting a golf tournament?

In Maple Leaf land that is "elite". Do the Leafs have any superstars? I think Morgan Rielly comes the closest.

I'd rather see Rielly as cap. He seems to have more leadership qualities.

    No, none.

I also see Rielly as the better leader but it'll probably go to Matthews for obvious reasons. He was drafted 1st overall by the Leafs. The chosen one if you will. He's also the highest paid Leaf. Only second to McDavid in the whole league. Eichel is captain of Buffalo. It would be a huge disappointment to Matthews if he wasn't captain.

    Marner, you know that.
