Woman arrested for ‘stomping all over’ sea turtle nest in Miami, police say

A Chinese citizen living in Michigan was arrested Saturday after “stomping all over” a sea turtle nest in Miami, authorities said.
Yaqun Lu, 41, was seen with a wooden stick in her hand “jabbing at the sea turtle nest” as she stomped around with her bare feet, Miami Beach police said. The nest was in an area closed off from the public by sticks, yellow tape and a “Do Not Disturb” sign, according to the Miami Herald.

“Thankfully, it appears the eggs were not damaged,” Miami Beach police tweeted.
Lu is facing a felony charge of molesting marine turtles or eggs.

Lu is a Chinese citizen who listed a Hudsonville, Mich., address. The Chinese consulate in Houston was notified about the arrest, the Herald reported.
Sea turtles are protected by federal law, and Florida laws make it illegal to harm them or their offspring. Nesting season runs from May 1 through Oct. 31, according to Miami Beach police.

Very sad. I love sea turtles and I know that their nests are very vulnerable. :(

I remember laying on the beach in Barbados and feeling something on my chest. It was a cute sea turtle looking up at me. :)

We can't vent our wrath on one dim tourist, our consumer lifestyles is decimating sea turtles.

We have to be more responsible. Some are acts of God, the Fukushima tsunami is the single most environmentally destructive event in history. Debris is still washing up on Vancouver Island and Puget Sound. We all have to do our part to save the sea turtles and be more aware of what we throw away. I contacted these dudes, I wanted to take them on as a charity, they asked of a single donation and sent me a bracelet.

The Great Lakes are also sick, want to do your part...pay no attention to the fertilizer adds that are broadcast every spring.
