This whole raptors mania got me thinking. I don't follow basketball but know enough of the team to know there are no Canadians on the team and this is not a national team but a pro team full of mercenaries like say Paris St Germaine or the Boston Bruins or New England Patriots. Players will go where the money is not their heart and good for them I'd do the same.

So given that the raptors are not Canadian culture what would you say makes up Canadian culture ? Or are we so diluted by so many cultures already here that a Canadian identity doesn't exist ?

When I say German or Italian or Greek or Chinese you automatically understand what their culture is about. Apart from hockey, maple syrup, the Sargeant Preston show, tortaire and poutine not much comes to mind.

So what would you say is Canadian culture and cusine?

Bear claws and back bacon aka Canadian bacon and lager beer. Soft spoken, play by the rules, quick to apologize, adult women with sensible shoes and hairdoos, Outdoorsy men who'll strap on skates and punch each other in the face on the ice but beer and smokes together off the ice whilst helping each other repair a deck. At least in Oz that was your stereotype (the only regular Canadian tv I recall we had back in the 90s was the Red Green show, on ethnic broadcasting aka SBS. His helpful handy hints were always a laugh). You Canadian perverts who share this site with me clearly amongst the best perverts anywhere in the world, bar none.

So I have long blonde hair and play djent (extreme prog) does that make me a Swedish viking? Not that it's a bad thing. Pillaging sounds kinda cool in moderation of course.

Telling people how we differ from our southern neighbours
is easier than giving an explanation of our culture. Like saying
we are both immigrants' countries but we are more
diversified, we don't own as many guns and we are both
suckers to have elected the leaders we have though
at least ours is a nice guy. And if I feel like being humble
I will also tell people most of the players on the Blue Jays
are from the U.S.

Mixture of American and British culture
Thats what we got accused of in Oz. Or being the outgoing brother to Canada's more reserved brother.

Cultures are naturally converging because of the world's interconnectivity, but American lite crossed with British culture seems accurate. You point out many of the salient features of traditional Canadian culture, some of which are inapplicable to people living in Canada's major cities. The things that differentiate cultures are often deeper and more subtle and therefore less interesting. Refer to the iceberg theory of culture for examples.

For the record I believe there are just as many NBA players from Toronto as there is from NYC.

Similar to Americans except that we are not as violent, we are smarter, friendlier, more liberal and have more concern for our fellow Canadians (more social programs).

= undefined and unconstrained. Just live life how you want to and experience the microcosm of world cultures within the GTA from food to girls and all in between, and have it all within 20-30mins of drive from our house. AFAIK GTA Canada has no culture and its so fucking beautiful. Some people resist and try to hold on to their archaic culture but inevitably resistance if futile. There is only 1 which is absolute freedom and we are on our way and in the first stages of this evolution right here within the GTA.

Why does everyone forget to include music. The Gta has a boat load of talent coming up especially in prog and underground!

I'd say similar to American except we always like to compare ourselves to Americans and to say that we are better.

Hum for some of us is mixture of American and French culture ;)

For the dudes I do not care much I like all Canadians... But for the girl Quebecoise are simply just the fucking best!! Beautywise but especially attitude wise.

My life would be so empty without quebecoise girl..

Cheers,

We are a kind people with little ambition. Our population is among the smartest in the world, our education system is highly regarded, but we have a resource based economy because it is easier.

I would say we have no culture anymore. Once upon a time we did.
But now it's gone because we have had to bend over backwards to accommodate other cultures so we don't hurt their feelings.
I like what the Australian PM said about 10 years ago "conform to our beliefs or don't come here. You choose to come here,we didn't ask you to come here".

I would highly disagree here. Yes, if we measure intelligence and education by the average numbers, we may be ahead. But when it comes to real talents, we are missing them. There are no great Universities in Canada and there are no high-schools where truly gifted students can study. We are loosing our best students to American schools and enjoy the upper level of mediocrity. I guess, this is maybe what Canadians are about: striving to achieve upper level of mediocrity.
