Getting back on point. When I have travelled to smaller parts of Canada I'd say the more homogenous the population the more you can say they have a "Canadian" culture and identity. I often have thought that multiculturalism creates an uneasiness like no one truly trusts each other. I remember once Angela Markle saying the multicultural experiment failed in Germany. Would you really say the same here ?

Outside of Toronto Canada is very different place. Even Quebec as a province is more homogenous and they have more of an identity than us in the rest of Canada. Thoughts ?
Now there's your finger coming down on an essential aspect of Canadian culture. If you want to go a bit easy on poor self-centred TO, you could re-phrase it as "outside of Southern Ontario". The reality would still be the same.

I believe people say similar things about London, New York, Paris and Beijing.

"Canadian culture” is ill defined because the country is simply to new to have developed one relative to other older cultures. Mass migrations, political pandering and social media have all but ensured the arrested development of " Canadian Culture" going forward.

Some of the songs of Gordon Lightfoot capture unique English Canadian nuances and Quebec has their own artist with the same equivalent. In reality I think many a stranger would find Canada to be a nation that is a great place to live in with an underwhelming and ambiguous cultural identity.

I grew up in rural Quebec and we had a fairly mixed demographics each with their own unique language and culture. We were French, English, Irish, Scots, Ukrainians and Italians.

Later I attended McGill in Montreal and saw a wider demographics. Became BFF with a Chinese student from a rich Singapore family.

Stan Rogers. And before either of them Ian and Sylvia, who gave Gordy his start as a back-up guitarist.

Our Great Canadian Cultural Curse is sharing a language with the United States without at least an ocean between us. Cultures are built on the messages of artists, and if an artist wants to reach bigger audience — very few don't — that huge audience tends to hoover them away as fast as they find their grown-up voices. Part of why neither of us thought to mention Joni Mitchell, James Cameron or Saul Bellow.

I would say we have no culture anymore. Once upon a time we did.
But now it's gone because we have had to bend over backwards to accommodate other cultures so we don't hurt their feelings.
I like what the Australian PM said about 10 years ago "conform to our beliefs or don't come here. You choose to come here,we didn't ask you to come here".
Amen to that. So true! Only the Quebecois have the balls to say what they think and support their French culture without fear of being "labelled."

I love the way some "true Canadians" say their culture has been destroyed by immigration. There wasn't any culture in the first place, otherwise it could stand on its own two feet.

Immigration is good for Canadian culture. If it wasn't for all the little restaurants with signs that say 'Chinese and Canadian Food' how would we ever have known we had a national cuisine? And thanks to Québec, most of the rest of us even know what the word means.

Good thing they didn't stop 'our people' from immigrating, eh? We mighta had to choke down croissants and good bread instead of Timbits and American Wonderbread.

Canadian culture? Simple. There isnt any.

There is no culture when you cant go around without offending someone or stepping on someones feelings. When your own identity is stripped from you because it isnt socially acceptable to a group of any kind or fly a 1 flag as a united nation?

Liberalism is the BIGGEST form of social terrorism.

Welcome to Canada?

While I agree with the first few points, Liberalism is not the issue it is the ego. As soon as we evaluate ourselves against another for superiority or inferiority we contribute to this problem. Culture also feeds egos. The issue is much more deep rooted than politics and culture. However, we are heading towards the right path. 1st step is the dissolution of identity including cultural and political identity.

This is one of the reasons Canada is one of the best countries in the world.

It has nothing to do with being superior or inferior.

Oh gee, wish I had a cross walk painted after my special interest or a seperate flag flown at city hall representing MY people cause you know, I feel my rights have been abandoned as a person and DEMAND Canada do something about or it HAS to be racist or discriminatory in some way.

Hadn't heard from you for a while. I guess all good things come to an end.

This whole raptors mania got me thinking. I don't follow basketball but know enough of the team to know there are no Canadians on the team and this is not a national team but a pro team full of mercenaries like say Paris St Germaine or the Boston Bruins or New England Patriots. Players will go where the money is not their heart and good for them I'd do the same.

So given that the raptors are not Canadian culture what would you say makes up Canadian culture ? Or are we so diluted by so many cultures already here that a Canadian identity doesn't exist ?

When I say German or Italian or Greek or Chinese you automatically understand what their culture is about. Apart from hockey, maple syrup, the Sargeant Preston show, tortaire and poutine not much comes to mind.

So what would you say is Canadian culture and cusine?
One word to describe Canadians: Insecure.

Just go through the annals of Sportsnet and during this whole playoff run they had columns dedicated to to what the US media were saying about the Raptors. I bed not one Media outlet in the US had an ongoing column about what Canadians were saying. My guess is they don't give a flying fadoo about what we think of them. I suggest we do the same.

When I meet a stranger I explained to him there is 2 different culture in Canada. The English one and the French one.

The French culture is thriving. Most probably due do our Latin blood. Probably for the same reason french girl are so hot and so open.
English culture is slimmer and the girl frigid. But we cannot blame them anglos are too busy making money ;)

haha mostly kidding here ;)

Cheers,

p.s. to have a good idea of Canadians just go travel with an American dude in Europe or latin america. After the first day he too will say to people he is Canadian ;)

Canadian Culture is the best of everything.

Taking different cultures and blending them into a common ideal. Look at the ingenious WealthSimple commercial, Tchaikovsky blended with basketball.
