Punitive damage phase to start next Tuesday, which could increase the damages to $33 million.

The verdict sends a strong message that colleges and universities cannot simply wind up and set loose student social justice warriors and then wash their hands of the consequences. In this case, a wholly innocent 5th-generation bakery was falsely accused of being racist and having a history racial profiling after stopping three black Oberlin College students from shoplifting. The students eventually pleaded guilty, but not before large protests and boycotts intended to destroy the bakery and defame the owners. The jury appears to have accepted that Oberlin College facilitated the wrongful conduct against the bakery.

The jury got it correct and there's more to come. What Oberlin faculty did was appalling. They even tried to persuade the bakery to drop the charges by reinstating their contract with the University. Fuck em.

The issue in this case was not the students’ protesting the bakery...nor was it their distributing pamphlets with lies accusing the bakery owners with a “long history of racism”.

The trouble for the college started when the Dean and other staff members unquestioningly supported all of these allegations from the students. They endorsed what the students were saying and participated in demonstrations where they handed out these same pamphlets.

If it was just the students demonstrating the bakery would never have bothered to sue them...none of them have any money anyway...but once the college staff joined in then the university became libel.

I think it’s the right decision. Oberlin College sounds like one of those Far Left colleges where students protest everything all the time and staff encourage it. There was apparently a protest against the company that runs the university cafeteria for culturally appropriating some other culture’s dishes (and making them poorly).

Some of these people need a dose of reality that you can’t just get outraged and talk shit about others without checking your facts.

This decision will destroy Right Wing fake news outlets.

The very dangerous undercurrent here is leftist youth (and faculty) supporting lawlessness and disregard for other's property. This wasn't about police using excess force with minorities or draconian drug laws. It was simply about a small business owner trying to protect their property.

I agreed with you up until your last sentence. It was the conservative news outlets like Fox News that broke this story while the liberal news outlets stayed relatively silent.

I believe Knuckle Ball is saying that Right Wing news outlets disseminate "fake news" and they are in trouble. I think it's a big leap from the Oberlin College case to political commentary on news outlets. I'm not a legal expert, but news outlets have a lot of leeway under libel laws. Of course, this will be an ongoing challenge in the internet age where everyone and anyone can start a web page or a podcast and claim they are a legitimate news site.

Someone else here lobbed a salvo at Fox News. Again, this case is very different from news outlets. By the way, Fox News pretty much sticks to the normal bitching and moaning of the other political party. They have rarely delved off into hearsay and unconfirmed, anonymously sourced material. Trump has brought out this incredible surge in news gossip. I'm not sure it's illegal under our current laws.

This would be an entirely different case if the Oberlin College student newspaper had wrote that there have been alleged incidents of minority students being treated unfairly at this business establishment.

Dollarama right here in Toronto has been accused of racial profiling. Then there was that grocery store in Chinatown who caught a black guy shoplifting. (The police arrested the store owner.) So, it is not just bakeries.

"stopping three black Oberlin College students from shoplifting."
