I was at the game at MLG when he got his 100th shutout which was a record at that time. And by coincidence George Armstrong also got his 250th goal at that time.

I'd heard that he was a surly guy and an alcoholic.

The movie shows just how bad the bad old days were. By the time he died (age 40), his body was a mess.

It was Sawchuk and not Bower in the final game of the Stanley Cup series in 1967.

Very cool.

I honestly don't remember which team. My Dad had season tickets in the 3rd row of greens between centre ice and the blue line. We were just behind the main camera that the broadcast used about 70% of the game. The camera man's name was Al. And tickets were approx. $20-25.

From what I read, Bower was gassed and let in 6 goals in G4 of the Final against the Habs. Sawchuck started the last two games and only allowed 2 goals.

Sawchuck was four years younger than Bower, but he lived a hardscrabble life. It's suspected that he suffered from CTE, he got nastier as his career progressed. He got into a bar fight while with the Kings and died of complications from a bleeding liver.

A hobbyist never reveals his age. But old enough to have enjoyed a golden era of hockey.
X2 and I remember Bobby Hull standing in the hallway exit signing every last autograph for half an hour after a loss,
A real class act

It's deja vu all over again.

Hull did the exact same thing at a hockey cards collectible event at The International Center in the mid 80's. I remember that day fondly, I was Jean Beliveau and Henri Richard's chauffeur for the event. The Pocket Rocket was quiet deferring to The Prince who had the gift of the gab. I may not have even attended the event if The Prince hadn't told me to park the car and join him and Henri.

Gotta check, but I remember it as him getting into a fight with Ron Stewart (another ex-Leaf) when they were both playing for the Rangers.

Sawchuk Death

But for all his achievements, Stewart, who died on March 17 at 79, was shadowed by a moment away from the rinks: a “tragic, senseless, bizarre” incident, in the words of the Nassau County district attorney, William Cahn, that led to the death of a Rangers teammate, the Hall of Fame goalie Terry Sawchuk.

On the evening of April 29, 1970, after the Rangers’ regular season had ended, Stewart and Sawchuk were preparing to close up a house they rented in East Atlantic Beach on Long Island. Before they did, they went to a bar, where they got into an argument. Shouting soon turned to shoving.

After they returned to the house, the dispute resumed, and they pushed each other on the lawn, witnesses said. Sawchuk fell and injured his gallbladder and liver. He underwent surgery three times, but died of a blood clot on May 31 at a Manhattan hospital. He was 40.

The old days. I remember my mom (who was a real estate agent at the time) showing a property to Eddie Shack in the late 70's or early 80's. Eddie couldn't read or write much. Probably not that unusual among that generation of NHL players.

Eddie did know that if he looked after the nickels and dimes, the dollars would look after themselves.
He had a nose for value!

When Bobby Baun joined the Red Wings he asked Gordie Howe how much he was making. Gordie said I'm the highest paid player on the team. Baun said you must be making more than $70,000 (Howe wasn't).

Except when he was beating his various wives, perhaps.
