You have to but a $60 a year membership

Is it worth it?

Is the food fresh?

Is the meat crappy?

Do you have to buy bulk to save $? If so, forget it, as you will eat those potatoe chips because they are in your house LOL

It’s more beneficial and valued to take their executive membership which costs more but in return you get certain % of all your purchases that will payoff the membership cost at the year end.
Costco cost and quality is hands down. Their return policy is the best and easy.
I have been their member for a decade and never had any regrets till to date.

I say it is not worth it. I only saw big bargains when the Canadian dollar was higher against the US dollar. You do not need a card to use the pharmacy. If I need anything I ask my brother to get it for me or to buy pre-paid gift cards for me. I bought my winter tires with gift cards.

Depends if you're single, probably not. They do have some good deals, their gas is low, but you need to live close to one that has pumps. Meat is very good. But not cheap. I go because the membership is given as a gift to me otherwise for prices no frills and walmart are very competitive.

In a house somewhere
I have been tempted to get a membership as I have heard great things about their products, etc. However whenever I drive by the local Ajax Costco the parking lot is FULL, the lineup for gas is LONG and I can't see myself becoming a member for that. I have better things to do with my time.

Between No Frills, Food Basic, Loblaws, Real Canadian SS and Sobeys, I can always get whatever deals I want and in the quantity I use. I can't see myself getting a membership just to stock up on stuff that I don't need.

^Indeed. CostCo is too crowded for groceries or frequent visits.

I got a CostCo membership mostly to buy their 90% pure protein powder. The money I save on this each year (compared to Walmart or Amazon) pays for the membership many times over. The store-brand Kirkland multivitamins cost about half as much as the name brands. The once a month I'm there, I've bought odd items (bags of chocolate, paper shredder, large jerry cans) when I come across them.

I got my 65" LG TV from CostCo's web site. Found them selling it around Black Friday delivered for the same price as buying it in-store elsewhere.

I have been Costco's member for more than a decade. I've found their products are the best in the retail business both in quality, quantity, freshness and price per unit. In every year, I have got more than $200 back from using their credit card which is Master Card now and used to be American Express. I stopped going to other retails long time ago such as Loblaws, Metro, Walmart, Canadian Super Store, Sobeys / SafeWay, No Frills and Food Basic. I've found the quality of products in those retails are crap and prices are overpriced.

However, that is proof right there that a lot of people think a membership is worth it.

If you get to the store at opening, it sure eliminates a lot of those lines.

I have a Costco Membership for years now and I love it . Got lucky because I have a split membership with my brother and we split the cost . My 2 trucks have large gas tanks so buying gas I save a bundle . Sure the lines can be long but they go fast . As for better things to do with your time , well I like saving money with my time . I get their flyer on-line so I know what's on special . Prices are pretty good but you have to know how to shop . I don't walk out with a full buggy every time I go there .

Their return policy is excellent . Got my 2 pair of glasses there at a great price a few months ago . Their dispensing fee at the pharmacy is cheap . Just under $4.00 . Some pharmacies charge $12 or $13 .

If you go to a Costco that sells propane you only pay for the propane that goes into your tank . You pay by the liter . Not a full price if you had a partial tank . Their propane prices are cheap compared to other places .

I use their Costco credit card and I save even more . They send you a cheque at the end of the year . That cheque pays for mu membership .

Not interested in getting a Costco membership .... Well it's your money .

I have one. Use it to buy cat litter(40 lbs box is the same price as a little one in store). Baking needs, olive oil, razors toothpaste etc.

Large meat packs for entertaining. Popcorn bags.

Usually do a run every two three months. More than save the membership price.

you don't have to go there that often to save the money you pay for the membership. If you are with someone or have a family then it is a no brainer. You can easily save 15 to 20 bucks on just one visit. Keep in mind that it is hard to go there and not drop 150-200 dollars but as long as you are going to use everything you bought then it is worth it. Paper towels and toilet paper is good. The meat is excellent but not cheap, vitamins are crazy cheap. The propane as mentioned above is great as you pay for only what is put in the tank. I get my membership worth on the propane and vitamins alone. The coffee is a fantastic deal as well. Sometimes you can get 2 lbs. of Sumatran for $14. It is usually 13-16 per pound anywhere else. Casual clothes are also inexpensive but well made. The list goes on and on as far as products that are a deal compared to anywhere else. The gas is cheaper by about 7 cents but I couldn't be bothered waiting in line so I buy that elsewhere.

I bought a pair of Rockport shoes there, which retailed for $189 at a local shoe store; I paid $39.99. Used their travel services and rented a car in Florida for two weeks at $300.00. Regular rate at another discount car place- $510. 00 for the sames class of car. Red meat? Always AAA or better and the cuts are way superior to almost anything you will find in a regular grocery store. I could go on and on and .....

Bought my hearing aids at Costco, half the price versus other retailers and you get cones and wax guards free for life. Have to pay for batteries but a card of six wheels is as cheap as a single at any pharmacy. I find quality high at Costco but electronics might be last year's model, so what.

Short answer, it depends.

Long answer, how much are you going to use it? Or are you going to quickly recoup your membership fee by making a big ticket purchase that's significantly discounted? Or are you going to buy gas there on a regular basis?

I looked into it a few months back but I didn't think I'd use it because you really do need to buy large scale when you shop there, and I don't need that much. I did buy some phones that no one else had but I got a friend to buy them for me and I reimbursed him. I know one guy who buys gas there but the line ups are frequently 20-30 minutes and that's not worth savings of 6 cents a litre to me.

There's also the chaos factor as the place is packed during busy periods. If you don't hit the right windows it's like Xmas shopping at the mall.

If you do a lot of shopping and can make use of the bulk, it's probably worth it. Otherwise it all depends on if you have a very specific reason for getting a membership. If not, I'd pass (and did).

Never understood the theory of paying for a store membership to buy something? Sounds like a cash grab.Maybe a politician came up with that idea.

If most items are cheaper than other retail stores, why not just get rid of the membership fee? Imagine how many more people would shop their.

O

OnTheWayOut

The membership thing always puzzled me as well. But perhaps their studies show that the ones who pay for membership buy more stuff? After all, it was originally a wholesaler for other businesses. Imagine how crowded it would be if they had no membership fee! I balked at it for years until I realized that I saved way more even with the fee. Kids are gone so shopping for mainly two people I get rebate check of over $120 per year. That pays for the executive membership. End result I shop there for free basically.

While some items are not necessarily cheaper, the quality is generally through the roof. I rarely let a steak, burger or hot dog from anyone else touch my bbq.

As for the crowded stores, shop there midweek. A few less free samples than weekends but even the gas lines are shorter. I often find gifts for SPs (and others) that they seem to appreciate and don't care (or know) that I paid less than Shoppers or elsewhere.

Can't beat the snack bar $1.50 quarter pound all beef hot dog with pop (free refills), especially if you are feeling low on sodium..... 1800 mg ought to get your sodium jacked back up lol. Wish they would bring back the $5 smoked meat sandwich.....

Is it worth it? To me, yes in spades. To each their own.....

Is the food fresh? Yes as turnover is incredible. However the produce can go bad because of the quantity, I share it with others to prevent spoilage.

Is the meat crappy? To the contrary, it generally is better quality than your average grocery, better than some butchers. Not a lot cheaper, but a lot better.

I need to buy a bigger house to put all the shit my woman buys in bulk that we will never use in one lifetime. Having said that their deal on the propane refill is the best.

It is in the woman dna to buy buy buy.

Membership fee also encourages to buy more to recoup the membership cost. Outweighs the cost of lingerers who buy little and take up space. Parking lot is crowded enough as it is.

The public rationale is CostCo makes most of its money from the membership fees, while the merchandise is sold at razor-thin margins. :abnormal:

Exactly. And with respect to the crowds? CostCo is extremely efficient at the check out counter. Looks like you have a long wait, but before you know it, you are through. Amazing how many people they move in such a short time.
