I go in there looking for 3 or 4 items and end up getting a dozen. Lots of free samples to munch on though.

The myth of the Costco membership is one that in ingrained in the public

Newsflash; you can buy 99% of the items online WITHOUT a membership (yes there is that odd random super discount that requires a membership but majority of items do not)

Oh also; you can buy membership instore, use it 11 months, then return it if you are not satisfied with it
Moneyback guarantee and all

I save over 1,500 a year in gas alone, propane is cheap too as you pay amount filled and not a flat rate.

Gas is the worst myth of Costco
People line up (often for hours) trying to save $0.05 a L

In my exp 99% of gas stations within walking distance to a Costco price match and you can still use all your loyalty programs there
(heck you can STACK with your Costco credit card, get the air miles or petro points or whatever PLUS the % cash back since you used your Costco card)

Often its cheaper to buy gas outside Costco than in it

Time is money and opportunity lost.

People often seem to ignore these two important factors and only look at the cost.

Imagine what you could be doing with your time vs. battling crowded stores and wasting your day when you could be doing more productive and enjoyable things like sailing unless you actually find this fun.

Online groceries and food delivery is the future. The quality is there and some of these places charge you like $10 for deliver to your house first thing in the morning.

Is it worth it? To my wife and I, yes. We probably save our annual membership on toilet paper, paper towel, cat litter alone. To avoid overspending, we make a list and stick to it. Allowing just one other item each not on our list.

The other thing I like about Costco is they have lots of product (from food to merchandise) you can't find anywhere else. I picked up a couple pairs of made in Canada, 3/4 length yoga pants with different patterns for the regular price of $19.00 ea. That's 1/4 of the price of Lululemons.

Anyway, it saves me money so I like it. Lineups aren't to bad if you go early or shop during the week.

Costco is worth simply based on their return policy.

I can buy some big ticket items and not even worry about warranties, etc. Costco takes anything back. You can bring back a half-eaten box of cereal and get your money back.

They make money off their memberships, so that is what they don't want to lose. The rest they don't really care about.

I never shop on a weekend, but there is always a line of some type. I don't go to Ajax, I go to the Oshawa one.

Different strokes for different folks. What doesn't work for you, is not necessarily an issue for others.

I was there today Tuesday and I could barely park and the line up at the cashiers were 15 long..fuck that. I left...I don't know if its because they were closed yesterday or because the weather is better and people were buying the plants. I had no patience.

I go fill up early in the morning, never line ups. My truck takes 140 litres and the price at Costco is at least 7-8 cents a litre lower the. Other gas stations. I use propane to work. Average price per tank is $14, any other place is over $20.

Time is money . Do you work 24 hours a day . I sure as hell didn't . Time is money ... That's what some Sp's say when they don't bother to clean up properly before they open the revolving door . Next ... hurry up ... time is money .

I enjoy going to Costco . Take my time and look around . Life is too short to be rushing around . Don't know which Costco you go to but I have a choice of 4 that I can go to . Big crowds . The line up goes fast . Don't know how people are forced to wait over half an hour to buy gas . I guess welcome to the big city with a large population is in order . Big city life . Isn't it great .

Don't know how you can waste a day shopping at Costco . I'm always home in less than 2 hours . That certainly is not a whole day . Some people like me enjoy shopping and look forward to it .

As for on-line grocery shopping and delivery ..... forget it . I'd rather pick and see what I'm buying when it comes to my food . How many times you have seen a fruit on special at a great price . Many times it's old stuff and they are trying to get rid of it . Order on-line and you could get garbage . Now what ... are you going to now go to the store and waste a WHOLE day bringing it back that item. You can order food on-line from Walmart but you have to go get it . IGA used to have home delivery but that ended years ago.

I don't care about sailing . Not into that but I do fish . Even if I don't catch anything I still have a good time fishing . Some people will say you are wasting your time fishing when you can go to the local fish market and buy your fish . I guess I could be doing something more productive but I choose not to .

Thank you Costco . A great store for me .

I went to Costco yesterday. I went around 2:15ish. Was out before 3. That included getting gas. Oh and having taste testers. Those take time to get. You have to walk the almost the whole store. Lol.

For people like TJ - that is 2pm to 3pm. So not wasting HOURS in the gas line up. LMAO!

At this point in my life I need to pick and choose which parts I focus my daily energy on because I can’t get to everything I want to do in a day. When I am not working I spend most of my time with the kids, than friends and family and last hobbies like sailing, sports, walking through parks, and listening to audio books or just reading a book or even this hobby. I have a list of things I’d rather do with my time than going to grocery stores and therefore I need to prioritize. I see energy as finite daily source that needs to be wisely invested in things that are most important. This is why I refer to it as time is money concept but in terms of energy. Time is energy. So you could be making money with your energy or investing it in things that make you happy. For me money is not an issue, energy is the issue.

Regarding quality of groceries most of the time it is really good quality. The times the quality is not there I just call in and they always give me a full credit. However I don’t abuse this as well. In this industry reputation is everything and many places will focus on giving you the best otherwise the will not pick up the groceries from the Ontario Food Terminal because they don’t want to hurt their client base. Places that deliver fresh vegetable delivery boxes or the top 10 organic food delivery options in Toronto are really good options. The good places know that reputation is everything and customer loyalty is huge for their business. For the boxed things grocery gateway is good and they also provide good quality in the produce. Although sometimes you do get banged up vegetables but not often. Loblaws is also an option however you still waste time and gas waiting in the parking lot for the groceries to be delivered to you car and pay like $5.

I get some people love shopping and people watching and is like a hobby and more power to you if you enjoy it. Although if people are looking at it from a savings point of view they are not considering all the factors like gas money, wear and tear on the vehicle, and risk of accidents. Why not than use your energy to make money like stocks or some online business and have the groceries arrive to your house while you are working on other things.

Why not than use your energy to make money like stocks
And as long as this phrase is used, you know right away that everything else the person says is a BS. If one says that they can "use energy" or even knowledge or research to make money on the stock market - it shows that the person has no idea what he/she is talking about but still like to express his/her opinion. There is only on possible way to "make" money on the stock market - diversify and enjoy risk premium for the risk taking. It is very easy and cheap to do with passively managed ETFs. As soon as you start "using your energy" try to analyse stocks and hand-pick them - you'll start to lose money (well, to be specific, your are loosing in certainty equivalence of your utility function plus additional dead weight loss in your time/effort).

When it comes to shopping and time wasting: Walmart and Food Basic are the worst: Walmart because of a slow lineups (takes much more time than Costco) and Food Basic because you'll still have to go to another store to buy fruits and vegetables of acceptable quality. If you do not like large crowds - avoid Costco on weekends. But even with large crowds their check-out time is still the same as in any grocery store. Yes, parking maybe a problem, but here is an advice - drive to the farthest corner of the parking lot right away and walk 5 minutes to the doors. Problem solved.

Ha ha . That's what I do . Park in 1 corner of the lot where there is always good parking and walk to the doors . A little bit of exercise never hurt anyone . Went to Costco the other day . Store was packed but the lines went fast because of many cashiers were on duty .

I look at shopping as an good experience or as an outing . It gets me out of the house . I'm lucky because I have 4 Costco's to choose from . All within 15 - 20 mins driving distance . I have a Freshco , Food Basics , No Frills , Metro and a Fortinos all within a few mins. from where I live . I even will walk to one of these stores if I only need a couple of things . This way I get my daily walk out of the way and do a bit of shopping at the same time .

Assuming your tank tank is empty you would save $11.20 - not bad if there is no wait. You are one of the lucky ones who live close to a Costco and can get there at the crack of dawn.
