Hockey Hall of Famer Red Kelly packed several careers into his lifetime — sometimes at the same time.

But hockey was always at the heart of the things for the smooth-skating Kelly.

Kelly won eight Stanley Cups during a stellar 20-season playing career, moonlighting as a member of Parliament as he won NHL championships with Toronto in the mid-60s after starring in Detroit. He then took up coaching, making headlines in 1976 for "Pyramid Power" with the Maple Leafs.

Kelly, who died Thursday in Toronto at the age of 91, was both an elite defenceman and centre.

Condolences to his family and friends.

Sadly, it's possible that none of the 1967 Leafs will be around when and IF the Leafs ever win the Cup again.

I had opportunity to meet and interact with Mr. Kelly (and his wife Andra) on many occasions.
A wonderful couple, kind and generous with their time.

Rest in Peace, Leonard.

Before my time but he did coach the Leafs. I believe he was the coach when Borje Salming played his first season. I heard he was a gentleman on and off the ice.

There are a few 1967 alumni still around. The Chief is still hanging in but he's older than The Great Shat. Jim Pappin and Eddie Shack also, the former moved to Chicago and I haven't heard much from "Clear the Tracks" lately. Jim Pappin was the Leafs top goal scorer in the 67 playoffs.

At says on the roster sheet that Alan Stanley was 40 in 67.

Trivia question (I don't know the answer): Was 1967 the last time two Canadian based teams played for the Cup?

Yes, he coached in the mid 70's. "Pyramid Power"-Kelly believed that the pyramid gave off "energy", so before every playoff game against the Flyers in '76 , he , IIRC, placed mini Pyramids throughout the dressing room and under the team bench.

It did seem to work as the Leafs took the heavily favoured Flyers to a game 7. The Leafs scored 2 quick goals within the first 5 minutes of game, but eventually lost 7-2.

I guess Kate Smith was more powerful than the power of the pyramid.

According to NHL stats the Pappin, Stemkowski, Pulford line was the Leafs highest points producers in the 67 Playoffs. Pappin got the Cup clinching goal and The Chief finished it off with an empty netter.
