I like Giant Bike in Barrie. Staff is great. Been to another Giant Bike, staff is a pain in the ass to deal with.

Gears Bike Shop is alright.

Depends what you want to spend too. Looking to spend a few hundred bucks don't bother with Giant or stores like that.

Kijiji is probably your best bet. You can always ask for a discount and there's no tax. You'll get a lot more bike for $300 used than you will new. Just make sure the gears/brakes work properly and the wheels are true.

Anybody interested in an e-bike with a dead 24 volt battery? 26" tires, Triumph brand, 3 speed. Retail price was over $1,500 when new. No, a new 36 or 48 volt battery will not work on this bike.

BTW: Don't bother going to a professional bike store with a $300 budget. Try Canadian Tire and/or Wal-Mart. and/or police auction

Hey Darts,

There are lots of places online where you can generic replacement battery packs for obsolete products. And where you can just get the actual cells replaced. If you are good with a soldering iron and desoldering tool you can upgrade your cells and get off with a fresh charge for a lot less than a new bike.

Looking for a road bike under 300
Do you mean 3000? For 300 you will not get a reliable bike. When you are ripping 60km/h+ on the downhill you want a bike that you can trust. Dont risk your life with Walmart junk. Your life cost more then that. Go to Cycle Solutions they will find a good bike for you, set you up with proper bike shoes, clipless pedals and bike fit you. Bike fitting is very important on the road bike because you spend most of the time sitting down in pretty much one position.

You can definitely buy great bikes for 300. You just have to watch the used ads, and know what you are looking at. You will not get disk brakes or the latest shifting, but the older stuff can run for years. In addition, old wheels are often better given the tendency for trick wheels today with few spokes, radial lacing, heavy dish, etc.

If you learn to work on your bikes, you can save money and keep them running very well. I once picked up a bike a guy was letting go for very cheap, as it had mechanical issues. I fixed it with a 10 cent part.
Disk brakes are your number one safety. When going 60 or even 80 in hour on your road bike on a downhill section you want good brakes. Rim brakes dont really work. Ever tried them after hitting a puddle or in the rain? I wont ever swing my leg over a bike with rim brakes. I had enough of those in the 90's. Those things are are not safe in my opinion. I ride fast and hard and if I am doing over 60 km in hour and a car pulls up in front of me I know that disk brakes will help me stop right away but rim brakes wont.

As I always say if you are serious rider you need quality stuff and wheels are way better now then in the 90's. Ever owed a pair of carbon rims? They are light, stiff and awesome rolling. They dont even compare to old steel or aluminum rims. Those old shifters that would sit on your bike frame? Those things are horrible. I would never go back to that technology. Sometimes I have nightmares about those days. Sorry but not for me. Try Sram Eagle with 12 speed and put 32 chain ring on the front and you can climb mount Everest on your MTB. And it's all in 1/12. One shifter only for your rear gears and that's awesome That's technology.

I got bikes for SO and myself at Costco several years ago. Not top of the line but good sturdy bikes that held up well. I think they were less than $200 each about 6-7 years ago, haven't looked lately. Mine's 18 speed, hers 21 speed. We're not hardcore bikers but they fit our needs.

you get what you pay for. 300 is a crappy bike. that's a Canadian Tire special. Although if you think about it what would you rather do. Ride a crappy back or ride a hottie for one hour.

You can often get a good used bike for $300 that was probably $1000 + new 5 years ago. If it's in good shape and everything works, then it's a good deal.

Couple more comments.

1) Carbon wheels cannot take a hit.

2) Older bikes might last 100 years but they are made with solid steel and weigh a ton.

I would not rule out the police bike option. Good price, they test the bike and you know it is not stolen (Toronto is bike theft capital of the world).

One more comment (I guess that is 4 now). Make sure you get the proper saddle (not necessarily the one that came with the bike). Last year I went looking for a saddle and the female sales associate measured my bum to make sure I got the best fit for me.

Jealous, when I bought my bike the cute sales girl did not measure my ass.
