In Q1 2019, CNN was a top-10 basic cable network in total day viewers (No. 10), and has finished in the total day top 10 for 11 consecutive quarters (No. 7)
Not only that, but it also delivered year-over-year growth in total viewers. 7 percent growth, to be exact, So for all the noise about how no one is watching the network, it appears that someone is. It’s just might be that CNN viewers are not as devoted to the network 24-7-365 basis as Fox News and MSNBC fans are to their’s.
CNN is also touting its wins over MSNBC among adults 25-54, which is understandable considering the ad community takes this age group quite seriously. CNN has now outperformed MSNBC for 20 straight quarters in total day in the key demographic 25-54 (199,000 vs. MSNBC’s 183,000).
The network also resonated in the demo during dayside hours, beating MSNBC 26th consecutive quarter in A25-54, and had the network’s third highest delivery since 2003 in total viewers.
So yes, there are some positives. But there are also plenty of downs, the most obviously being that CNN remains in third place during prime time. Second, CNN was way down vs. Q1 of last year when it came to attracting adults 25-54. In prime time, the network was -25 percent. Despite being MSNBC in the total day demo, the network was -14 percent vs. Q1 of last year. But each of cable news’ big three seem to be losing younger news viewers, it’s not a trend unique to CNN.
