I never figured out what the central spire was for, the cathedral was imposing enough as it was. It was a late edition, built 30 years before Eiffel. Hopefully it will not be rebuilt, unnecessary.
It made the fire worse, not only going up in flames quick it also opened up an air source for the fire to spread through the roof. Fortunately the organ block is an extension of the main towers and made of stone. It survived intact with maybe a smattering of soot.
As for speculating what caused the fire, it's still smoking. Fire Marshalls will not start their investigation until the building is secure.

Interesting point about spires collpse opening roof. Sounds like one of those things nobody thought of but should of thought about
800-year-old building made of dried wood carbon that can easily burn and they added this tower to it never thinking of the consequences in case of fire
Extremely fortunate. I would speculate that a serious concern of the fire chief was no water damage inside the towers . They also house the famous rose stained glass , I wonder if they have permanant damage?
Considering every chared remain may have value as a relic investigation may take a while. I would think their big concern is getting some kind of make shift roof cover to stop rain
Another huge concern are the walls, while they still stand did the heat alter their chemical make up such that they can no longer support weight ?
