It's Asian Nicole. Amsterdam has its unique style. On account of its artistic heritage, elaborate canal system and narrow houses with gabled facades, legacies of the city’s 17th-century Golden Age, museums, Red Light District, and so on...attracts a considerable number of visitors every year.

I was really eager to visit this special city, and finally I made it last summer-2018!

"Hello, Amsterdam...Here I am !" :welcome:

Amsterdam is the capital city and most populous municipality of the Netherlands. The city is also the cultural capital of the Netherlands.

Amsterdam's name derives from Amstelredamme, indicative of the city's origin around a dam in the river Amstel. Originating as a small fishing village in the late 12th century, Amsterdam became one of the most important ports in the world during the Dutch Golden Age (17th century), as a result of its innovative developments in trade. During that time, the city was the leading centre for finance and trade.

The 17th-century canals of Amsterdam and the 19–20th century Defence Line of Amsterdam are on the UNESCO World Heritage List. As the commercial capital of the Netherlands and one of the top financial centres in Europe, Amsterdam is considered an alpha- world city by the Globalization and World Cities study group.

Amsterdam Centraal is the largest railway station of Amsterdam, Netherlands. A major international railway hub, it is used by 162,000 passengers a day. It was designed by Dutch architect Petrus Josephus Hubertus, who is also known for his design of the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. It was first opened in 1889, and features a Gothic, Renaissance Revival station building and a cast iron platform roof spanning approximately 40 metres.

I loved this place! Great architecture and it's in the heart of the city. There are many places near to central station for visiting. Talking about Amsterdam, which is one of my favorite cities I've been to in Europe. Very easy to explore the city in a bicycle or tram or even on foot. Central station is the place from which we get to the airport and different european cities.

The Rijksmuseum is a Dutch national museum dedicated to arts and history in Amsterdam. The museum is located at the Museum Square, close to the Van Gogh Museum, the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, and the Concertgebouw.

The current main building was designed by Dutch architect Petrus Josephus Hubertus and first opened in 1885. On 13 April 2013, after a ten-year renovation which cost € 375 million, the main building was reopened by Queen Beatrix. In 2013 and 2014, it was the most visited museum in the Netherlands with record numbers of 2.2 million and 2.47 million visitors. It is also the largest art museum in the country.

The Indonesian rijsttafel, a Dutch word that literally translates to "rice table", is an elaborate meal adapted by the Dutch. Brought back to the Netherlands by former colonials and exiled Indonesians and Indo-Europeans (Eurasians) after Indonesia gained its independence in 1945, the rijsttafel was predominantly popular with Dutch families with colonial roots.

It consists of many side dishes served in small portions, accompanied by rice prepared in several different ways. Popular side dishes include egg rolls, sambals, satay, fish, fruit, vegetables, pickles, and nuts.

Rijsttafels strive to feature an array of not only flavors and colors and degrees of spiciness but also textures, an aspect that is not commonly discussed in Western food. Such textures may include crispy, chewy, slippery, soft, hard, velvety, gelatinous, and runny.

When I was in Amsterdam, I went to the Sampurna Indonesian restaurant. Fantastic place just off the flower markets. The interiors are a nice mix of elegant and exotic. Manageable dishes in tapas style. The food was great and very tasty! Yummy! :encouragement:

The Van Gogh Museum is one of the many art museums in the Netherlands dedicated to the works of Vincent Van Gogh and his contemporaries in Amsterdam. The museum opened on 2 June 1973. The museum's collection is the largest collection of Van Gogh's paintings and drawings in the world.

I visited this museum quite early that day- 9am, and tried to avoid the crowds. Definitely a must visit for art lovers. The art is obviously great. The facility is beautiful as well - modern and filled with light. :thumb:

Vincent van Gogh (30 March 1853 – 29 July 1890) was a Dutch post-impressionist painter who is among the most famous and influential figures in the history of Western art. In just over a decade he created about 2,100 artworks, including around 860 oil paintings, most of them in the last two years of his life. They include landscapes, still lives, portraits and self-portraits, and are characterised by bold colours and dramatic, impulsive and expressive brushwork that contributed to the foundations of modern art.

He was not commercially successful, and his suicide at 37 followed years of mental illness and poverty.

Van Gogh made several sets of sunflower paintings from 1887 through 1889. One from 1887, when he lived in Paris: He made his most famous set of Sunflower paintings in 1888 to decorate his house in Arles. He did so before the painter Paul Gauguin joined him to live and paint together.

Red Light District in Amsterdam is well-known in the world. This area in the oldest part of Amsterdam is known for the red neon windows that display barely-dressed prostitutes advertising their services; it's all perfectly acceptable as long as it stays inside this designated area of the city.

It consists of a network of alleys containing approximately three hundred one-room cabins rented by prostitutes who offer their sexual services from behind a window or glass door, typically illuminated with red lights and blacklight. Window prostitution is the most visible and typical kind of red-light district sex work in Amsterdam.

The area also has a number of sex shops, sex theatres, peep shows, a sex museum, a cannabis museum, and a number of coffee shops that sell marijuana.

This is fabulous to see and explore...it is very busy, best to go after dark for full effect. A must see if you are in this wonderful city. Btw, I had a fantastic Argentina steak dinner in this area. Wow...it was delicious! :encouragement:

The National Maritime Museum is a maritime museum in Amsterdam. It ranked as 11th most visited museum in the Netherlands in 2013. In 2017 the museum received 350,000 visitors.

The museum is dedicated to maritime history and contains many artefacts associated with shipping and sailing. The collection contains, among other things, paintings, scale models, weapons and world maps.

The map collection includes works by 17th-century cartographers Willem Blaeu and his son Joan Blaeu. The museum also has a surviving copy of the first edition of Maximilianus Transylvanus' work, De Moluccis Insulis, the first to describe Ferdinand Magellan's voyage around the world.

Nice museum about the history of shipping of the Netherlands. If you are interested in maritime history, it is a must-see! :thumb:
