They're huge !! I'm sure a pinch will take you finger off...they should keep these breeders alive..

The meat was hard to get out of the shell, too, but “it still had nice lobster flavor” and “it was not as tough as I had expected it to be, but quite a bit tougher than regular size lobster claws,” @julesfood wrote on her Instagram story. She weighed the shell after enjoying her meal and found that it weighed 1.5 pounds, so the meat was half the total weight.

As far as price goes, they appear to be selling it for $9.99 per pound. Another Instagrammer dubbed @wine_country_foodies stumbled upon even bigger claws at a Costco in Oakland, California. As evidenced by the label shown in the post, these pincers weighed in at almost 5 pounds.

Imagine that lobster swimming up on you in the ocean… no thanks. It’s unconfirmed whether all Costco stores are selling Godzilla-sized crustacean claws, but only time will tell if they become the next cult-favorite Costco food you need

When I was in the Bahamas years ago, I was snorkeling and I saw the biggest lobster I’ve ever seen in my life. It was the size of a dog, easy. Not a small one, we’re talking the size of a Lab or so. Luckily, it was a spiny lobster, they don’t have claws. Still gave it a wide berth. Lobsters basically live forever as long as something doesn’t kill them, and they keep growing, so there are definitely some gigantic, centuries-old behemoths out there.

That looks like the claw of an Atlantic lobster, the same variety that you see in most supermarkets. I presume it has been pre cooked and frozen. I only buy live lobsters. The most tender and best eating lobsters are about 1.25 lbs. and 1.5 lbs. I can bet you will need a sledge hammer to get into that claw and the meat will be tough and grainy. According to the article the lobster claws cost $13.40 CDN a lb., half of it is shell.

Funny story- I was once in a big fish market and I was picking a few lobster out for myself out of the lobster tank. I would pick them out and examine them, see if they lift their pincers in defence, turn them upside down and slap their tails to see if they flap back, stick my finger in their small walking legs pincers to see how hard they clamp on my fingers. All of which indicate liveliness. Little did I know I was attracting an audience behind me. A guy in a business suit came up and asked me to pick a couple of lobster for him, then a well dressed lady ask me to do the same for her. I had the lobsters I needed and was about to leave when a bearded biker rudely whacked me on my back and said, Hey get me some lobsters. I picked him out a couple of 3-4 pounders that he would need a jack hammer to get the meat out of. I told him to cook it for 60 minutes. He paid a fortune for the lobsters ( most of it shell ) and got to eat shoe leather.

FYI- A 1.5 lb. lobster should be put in rolling boiling hot water and then covered and when it returns to a rolling boil it should be cooked for 10 minutes. ( + 3 minutes for each additional lb. ) My preferred way is to make a hollandaise sauce and cook the dismembered lobster parts in the sauce.

No kidding. When I was a kid, we had a family friend who had a place on the coast of Nova Scotia somewhere. We used to catch all kinds of sea creatures, and we used to like to poke at crabs and lobsters with sticks because we were dumb kids, I guess. Lemme tell you, a crab or lobster can snap a decently thick stick like it’s nothing. I saw a small lobster snap a metal pen right in half once. A gigantic lobster with a claw that big? Very likely crush your bones in half, or take a hand right off. Those things are strong as hell, and if they’re pissed off, they can really hurt you. Coconut crabs can break coconuts open. You don’t want your hands anywhere near those things.

You don't know what you're talking about.

Seriously.

Larger lobsters taste better than smaller ones. And they are not "as tough as leather". Quite the opposite in fact. I have spent many years working out east in the maritimes and Gaspesie and regularly eat 3 to 4 pound lobsters and although the claws require breaking with special tools in the kitchen, the meat is perfect.

Central Ont. between here & there
I have been to Cuba many times & dined on fresh lobster down there at a peoples homes & from a boat where we jumped in the water to catch our lunch.
Not sure why but Caribbean lobsters do not have claws

North Atlantic lobsters have a different taste, but I love them both

That's terrifying. An underwater insect the size of a dog. Gives you an idea of what Earth was like millions of years ago when many common land (and air) insects were also that size.

Yeah, it was unnerving for sure. He didn’t seem aggressive, pretty chill, actually. I guess he doesn’t have too much to worry about. Sure, he didn’t have claws, but the thing’s still a gigantic armored tank covered in spikes. I doubt there’s too much out there that’s gonna want to tangle with him.

It is comforting knowing that insects physically can’t get that big anymore.

Cold water lobsters have claws and warm water do not. I have eaten (well you only eat the tail) many Caribbean lobsters down in Cuba as well. But nothing beats eastern coast 1.5lb lobsters if you ask me.

Kinda looks like Trump's head
Damn you... I splattered my screen with coffee! haha

LOL... That pic up top is BS. I don't think it's Photoshopped, but shot with a wide-angle lens which greatly distorts whatever is in the foreground. The "source" of the report is Fox. Their source is some Tweet. The images of claws in the freezer seem legit, and they are big, but not THAT big.

And like someone said, these large lobster should be left to breed.

There's no shortage of Atlantic lobster. Young lobsters are/were a primary food source for cod. Since we managed to wipe out the cod, lobster are flourishing.

Haha! Its fake! I dont know why, bet I believe its fake! Sure Dougal. Yea, as fake as the allegations on Trump!

You can see the guys hands on the claw and hes holding it pretty close to his body...about a foot away. Looks legit to me.

Why do you think there is a conspiracy surrounding this claw? Do you think the Russians have something to do with this picture? LOL!

Maybe Muller can investigate the actual size of this claw with whats left over from tax payers pockets? LOL

No he is right, ex-wife comes from fishing town and the large lobster is always cheaper than the smaller ones.

You get lots of meat, but not the sweet good taste of the smaller lobster.

Its really the same with most meats
lamb
younger beef

Nope you're wrong.

Bigger is better when it comes to Lobster. You are equating them to mammals. Lobsters are a type of sea insect. Not the same thing. If it was tough, that means it was overcooked. Simple as that.

To properly cook a lobster, you boil it in salty water, and boiling time is proportional to weight and sex of the lobster. Females (wider tails) take slightly more time.

.

I agree.

I have spearfished very large Caribbean spiny lobsters in the BVI that weighed 5 lbs and they were sweet and tender. BBQ'd halved tails on a Hibachi

Largest Atlantic lobster I've eaten were about 7 lbs and they were really tender too. Another thing I find makes a difference is recently molted lobsters are pretty mushy.

However, I do agree with Mr. Cat about frozen cooked lobster. Yuck. Terrible texture in my experience.
