Don't know what your problem is. She doesn't know you how can she trust you. You could have been using a stolen credit card. You do know about credit card fraud or you've been living in your own little world your whole life. You sound very entitled like everyone should know who you are and trust you. Can't believe you went out of your way to inconvenience yourself and others when you were in the wrong.

You were the one who was rude here not her.

McDonalds taught us to bus our own tables, oil companies to pump our own gas, grocerie stores to bag our own groceries......
I refuse to be trained to be a cashier as well.

So no masturbation for you either?

I love it, fortinos has the best machines, wal marts are picky.
Agreed but once I got my Longo's points card I stopped going to Fortinos. Longos hasn't seen the need for self checkouts which is just as well. I try to be as friendly as I can with the cashiers, they seem to appreciate it. Haven't met a surly one yet.

Longos also has the best grilled chicken, kicks Swiss Chalet's ass. In several different flavours as well.

I wasn't rude, she was rude.

Let's examine your statement,

Credit Card Fraud Is A Problem....If it was you think they would have invented tap pay? If the store had a problem, they didn't have to allow that feature, there are lots of stores that don't have tap. People judge as they are, if they think a person is dishonest it's because usually they are.

And lastly when do people that engage in credit card fraud use it to buy eggs, milk, bread, vegetables, cold cuts, cheese, ice cream, coffee etc. And most of the items not the brand names, but the noname house brands.

She was ignorant I had my fun, had she been polite without the attitude, story be different and....

In the end I proved to her that it was my card, I am also entitled to prove the card is mine any way I wish.

Like I said, she don't trust me I don't trust her. How do I know she doesn't have a photographic memory and remember s all details and still my identity,

Ever heard of identity theft? One of the question from your bank is name an service you have with us.......

I remember Walmart introduced check-outs way back, and it was clunky, etc. They got rid of it.

Home Depot was one of the earliest adopters of it as well, and moving to the 'burbs' in Toronto in 2013, I did alot of home repair work, and have done so regularly, thus got really used to the mechanics of using the self-checkout. This was the first of the new generation ones I saw. Around this time too, I think Metro had it too which I had trouble (slow, clumsy) using.

Thereafter, Walmart re-implemented it and to my surprise, it was similar to Home Depot's. By that time, I was a pro at handling it. Including at Walmart and their veggies. After not shopping at Metro for awhile, it too was a breeze (no more clumsiness bagging, looking up produce, looking at the screen). This says to me, my self-checkout skills improved alot. So when I see a Shoppers, I prefer self-checkout when there is a line. Often I'm just picking up 1 or 2 items, and for the longest time, going back 10+ years, I thought Shoppers would be the most beneficial for self-check out since you have alot of slower older people, buying all this stuff, people trying to get flyer discounts, etc.

So regardless of cashier jobs (sorry, just because you implement minimum wage, all else isn't equal), I use it when I can.

I have seen articles about self checkouts that said stores loose close to 10% of the sale from customers either intentionally or by accident forgetting to scan some items.

I despise the idea of self checkouts. Large corporations are trying to get us to do the work that they pay employees minimum wage for. If I am not going to get a discount for using the self check out I am going to get my own discounts which I have done many times and never gotten caught.
I always forget to scan something especially a small very expensive item, and I know a lot of other people who do the same thing. When they realize that they are losing a lot of money through theft maybe they will realize that it’s cheaper to have real human cashiers.

That seems high. I've been using self checkouts for years and last week was the first time I found some cheese slices in the cart that I forgot to scan.

Yea but sometimes, you save time.. especially at Shoppers. That's got to account for something.

McDonald's has had phone ordering for a few months now so hopefully those kiosks will be next to go. I honestly don't mind since those machines are not designed particularly well. They don't always register when you press the screen (and the screen is usually filthy), don't register bar codes and the receipt printer can jam. Then you have to wait for a cashier to unlock the machine and manually scan your item. So much for saving time.

On top of that, retailers use different setups. The credit card reader / pin pan can be at eye level or on a separate unit, the receipt printer can be a separate device on top of the machine or small a slot at the bottom of the machines. Same thing goes for bills and coins: some on top, others on the bottom. In other words, there's no standardization making it unnecessarily confusing to use those machines. As far as I know, the machines at Shoppers only accept credit / debit, which at least makes the process slightly less confusing.

I just prefer to be served by the sexiest cashier. There are a couple of them who are my favourites and I always get the most pleasant interactions with them. Only when there are long lineups, coincidentally always at their counters, then it is the self checkout option for me.

@slurp
You do realize places like Walmart are terrified to confront a shoplifter unless it is incredibly obvious right?

As corrie mentions it is ridiculously easy to trim your bill, esp when it comes to food

It can mean higher prices depends on the amount of theft which leads to shrink/company loss. I see many people not scan some items and walk out.
How many is "many" people? I haven't seen that yet. I've seen a couple people not pay for bags, but that's about it.

Regardless, some shrinkage is to be expected. It's been estimated that for every 25% of sales that go through self-checkout, an additional shrinkage of 0.25% would occur, due not only to intentional theft, but also through ignorance. That means if 100% of goods were processed through self-checkout, there would be an estimated increase of 1% shrinkage. Whether or not the shrinkage is worth the labor cost reduction isn't something I can determine myself.

However, your argument was that they are pocketing the profit, so you must believe that the shrinkage is less than the labor cost reduction yourself. In which case, my argument stands.
