I think its fair, yes it was a mistake but he ruined so many lives. He'll be out in three and on parole for the rest.

It is harsh but if total time served is 3 years then that is reasonable. I do feel sorry for the driver and everyone else involved. There is really no sort of justice attainable here. The guy fucked up, probably not the brightest or careful guy. He was just doing his best to do a job in Canada as an immigrant and kaboom. Life can really suck. Poor fucker. Horrific for the kids, parents, bus driver etc etc . Just an overall smoking pile of crap situation.

Yup, no winners here.

They were saying on the news the Indian driver is a completely broken man now and full of remorse.
I would be too. Sometimes life hands you tragedy, not much you can do about it.

I too have run a red light or stop sign in the past, but luckily of course I didnt take out a bus full of kids.
He just had the worst timing in the world, thats all

This guy was the biggest idiot for pleading guilty.
I think his lawyer was a dipshit and represented him really poorly. To plead guilty without a deal is legal incompetence. Part of me wonders if this whole thing is racist. I have little doubt a white defendant would have got a much lighter sentence as ALL white defendants before him have.

I disagree he was an idiot to plead guilty. If anything it's coendable that he fucked up and owned up to it unlike so many cowards here in Canada and elsewhere in the world that know they did wrong and never own up to it. This poor Indian guy is a real man stepping up and taking it like a man.

We all make mistakes. I've run a red by accident luckily I wasn't hurt or hurt anyone. So I feel for everyone involved. The families will never see their loved ones and that sucks and this poor guy will live with this for life and get deported too.

We can't get self driving cars soon enough so human error gets erased or minimized. Did you guys hear about the TTC bus that crashed into a couple homes in Toronto? TTC drivers so reckless but because they have a useless union backing them they rarely get in trouble.

Apparently the judge gave 8 years to use as an example..there is no wayt they were going to give him a weak sentence, with all the deaths.

He shouldn't of gotten jail at all. He pleaded guilty immediately admitted he made a mistake and he was at fault. He was a man about it not many people would've done that. His tarp was flapping around probably scared first time driving such a large truck. I've made plenty of mistakes driving and in life luckily no one was ever hurt.

I see terrible drivers out there aggressive and driving dangerously !

I realize a lot of people where killed and hurt but it was a accident he didn't know what he was doing. If anything it's the mto fault for allowing a inexperienced driver to drive such a large vehicle.

I agree what he did was honorable, and commendable, but in Canada you have to do what is right FOR YOU.Especially in the legal system. Its adversarial. Once you're on the system its you against the province or crown, the odds are against you so you better be prepared to fight.

I disagree I think it shows extreme character for taking responsibility for his actions and for that I admire him. Qualities like that are in short supply these days.

Unfortunately he got shafted for it. The message the Judge really sent, "if you do the right thing in this court, you will get FUCKED"

Does anyone know, has this been fixed? Is it still possible to drive a truck out west after only two weeks of training? That's insane. An accident waiting to happen. Has the lesson been learned?

This is what happened IMHO. The lawyer who was on retainer by his employer told him to take the verdict of guilty. If this thing had to play out in court it could have resulted in problems for his employer with all the testimony and cross-examinations the employer may have ultimately been found culpable or at least received unwanted public scrutiny.

Subsequently, the driver was offered a very generous severance contingent on pleading guilty. So the truck driver's best option was to take the money for pleading guilty which would be a significant windfall because: (a) either way he's getting deported (not guilty verdict would be a miracle) and (b) the payout would go a long way in a country like India.

We will never know the truth because if this happened there was very likely an airtight non-disclosure agreement executed.
