I'm East Asian and love Karaoke. Started in the mid 90s in grade 10 when they didn't check IDs then and you could drink. Really around 1999 is when age crackdowns started occuring. And before the smoking ban, talk about smoke filled rooms. The only ones really left are the Korean ones (music room) where you rent a private room. A few at Yonge n Finch.. Twister being the classic. Seoul Karaoke might still be beside them. Great as you get privacy. Tip: Drink somewhere first then go.
There's a couple on Bloor Street still (old Korean town) and Yonge and Dundas area.
Chinese ones used to be around Chinatown (one in East Chinatown called Catwalk). They were generally more open floor ones. Viet ones used to be on Ossington and Bloor/Dufferin/Dundas West. They were smaller and was more like a local bar with singing.
Go to songs are More than Words, Imagine, some BoyzIImen, Elvis ballads, Disney. I used to suck but after practicing alot, getting into one broadway singer, it improved my pitch big time. Office Pub on Thursday nights have it too, but it's in front of everybody. But if you pick a popular song, the whole place will sing with it.
