Is Trump “truly” a racist?

Sometimes I wonder if Trump truly believes in anything other than making money and promoting himself.

Trump has shown inclinations towards racism for many years. He was sued for racial discrimination in his apartment holdings; he embraced Birtherism for years. But in terms of his being the hard core white nationalist that we see today I kinda wonder how sincere he is.

I think Trump is a salesman first and foremost and has discovered that when he says certain things at his rallies it gets a rise out of the crowd...so he repeats it and repeats it...they become predictable applause lines at is rallies.

For example, I don’t think Trump has any longstanding animosity towards Hillary; he invited her to his wedding FFS. But when the Lock her Up chant became a thing at his rallies he embraced it and it has now become one of his trademark applause lines.

Same thing as Build the Wall, the travel ban, etc. I’m not sure Trump genuinely believes in any of this stuff. However, it has just become part of his brand and that’s what he sells.

Over time, I believe that by speaking at his rallies and repeating this drivel I think he may have radicalized himself into the giant racist asshole we see before us...but if his base wanted something new he would discard all this crap in a heartbeat, rebrand himself, and claim the old brand never existed...Because he ultimately doesn’t believe in anything other than promoting himself.

It's a great question, and one that raises uncomfortable discussions. In the U.S. we tend to use the term "racism" when we're not talking about race at all, but occasionally nationalities, and far more often cultures.

Somehow "I don't want Mexican citizens to come into my country illegally" becomes "I don't want Mexicans in my country" to "I'm a racist". Mexicans are not a race, and certainly criminal Mexicans are not a race.

I think you're dead-on about Trump. Anyone who works with a great many CEOs, especially New York CEOs is very familiar with his playbook.

There are no biological 'races' of humans.
There is no specific genetic markers that can define us and/or divide us that way.

That means that definitions of race are really cultural and not genetic.
So yes, 'Mexicans' becomes a cultural division of people, just like Muslims, which is a religion and not anything biological, is also a cultural division of people that we refer to as a 'race'.

Conveniently malleable to any argument you'd care to make about anyone. Typical. Legally “a set of individuals whose identity as such is distinctive in terms of physical characteristics or biological descent”, so no, not cultural.

Agreed. I can't read his mind, and I don't like him, but I don't think he's a hardcore white nationalist or an outright racist a la David Duke. He's just an opportunist (and a pathological liar).

Hmmmm, not really. Islamaphobia isn't racism, clearly. I don't like Islamic extremists, and those who support them actively or passively. That in no way makes me a racist.

I don't think Trump is a racist, but he's an asshole. I, on ther other hand, am neither a racist nor an asshole.

It's 2019 and you still believe that things as innocuous as wanting to protect the nation's border is racist.

The real question is, how are you still so ignorant?

This is what I wonder too. He may not be a hardcore white nationalist but he’s certainly willing to do business with those who are.

Similarly, I don’t think trump gives a shit about white evangelicals or abortion but if opposing abortion gets these people onside then he’s suddenly Mr Pro-Life.

The "Fine People" lie has been used as tool to spread fear and racial division countless times EVERY day since it occurred.

Compare the Wikipedia description of the “fine people” fake news from Charlottesville to the actual transcript. Not even close.

But I am curious. Do you honestly believe trump shares your values/beliefs or is he just pandering to you to get your support?

That just confirms what I've been saying.
Islamaphobia is racism.
That's exactly what M-103 was about, to state that Islamaphobia is a form of racism.

You need to learn to be more critical of fake news media. When you see the world clearly and objectively, the answers to your questions will reveal themselves.

Neither. But it's impossible to use logic with a TDS sufferer.

Why are you anti-American?

My guess would be that if you were to look into trump’s heart, you wouldn’t find someone as bigoted and hateful as you. It just suits his purposes to play to your bigotry and racism...It would probably be disappointing to learn that your Dear Leader is simply exploiting your dark instincts for his own personal gain.

I may be wrong, though. Maybe he’s just as racist as he says he is?

Right he'll do business with anybody. He'd be pro-abortion too if the US had another large and reliable voting bloc that could deliver the votes across the USA better than evangelicals.
