Sad news. Even though my cousin nicknamed me Davy Jones, Peter was always my favorite.

That leaves only Mike Nesmith and Mickey Dolenz as the surviving members. I still can't believe that both of them are in their seventies.

Even though they were manufactured, I loved The Monkey's. Peter Tork was an actual musician and was responsible for much of their sound.

The Beatles hated being compared to The Monkeys, it drove them to create a more expansive sound from Revolver onward. Sgt Pepper's crushed The Monkeys.

Sad news indeed. The Monkees were a very big part of my childhood AND to this day. RIP Peter.

I'd be surprised if the Beatles gave even one second of thought to what the Monkees were doing and it is widely accepted that the Beatles recorded Sgt. Peppers in response to the Beach Boys' Good Vibrations, an album that they greatly admired.

Peter Tork always looked like he was having fun.

At the risk of being pedantic, "Good Vibrations" was a single, not an album. It's a point worth making because it's often considered one of the last "great" singles of the era that wasn't drawn from an album (other than a few Beatles singles that came later, such as "Hey, Jude"). Of course, the song did get tacked on to the Smiley Smile pseudo-album long after its release as a single. As well, I believe it is generally accepted that it was the Beach Boys' Pet Sounds album that influenced Sgt. Pepper's -- though the influence is very minor. (Sgt. Pepper's doesn't sound at all like the Beach Boys.) I would argue that it was the other way around -- it was the Beatles who influenced the Beach Boys, with Rubber Soul shaping Pet Sounds.

Anyway, I do agree that The Monkees had no influence whatsoever on The Beatles. Having said that, The Monkees hung out with some pretty cool people and bands down in Laurel Canyon. R.I.P. Peter Tork.

Yes. You are absolutely correct that it was Pet Sounds. Good Vibrations just popped into my head and that was what I typed.

I definitely remember reading numerous times about how much the Beatles were impressed by Pet Sounds and there may have been a bit of admiration type rivalry. A agree the two albums do not sound alike but what the Beatles liked was how well the songs were written and crafted by Brian Wilson. The Beatles tried to be better songwriters because of Brian.

Sad in a way, but 77 is old. He had a good life, with some hard knocks, due to lack of interest in money. He was a real musician. Saw him banging away on the piano furiously on "another pleasant valley sunday". He played quite a few instruments. Seemed to be a very like able guy.Watched a you tube documentary on them recently and interest in them continued, with a genuine fan base. Piece of trivia on the doc. Steven Stills, who was a friend of Peter Tork in the Greenwich village days, auditioned for the Monkees, but didn't make the cut.

I am surprised he made it to 77 years of age. In the early 80s he was trading on his fame and was singing in small bars. He was not allowed to sing the Monkees songs. He was doing a lot of drugs and a wreck. I saw him in an interview back then and he said that he was coming back bigger than the Beatles. I saw Davie James in a 20/20 interview. He talked about how he was 88 lbs, not because he was sick. He said because he had no food. He had it hard after the Monkees TV show. He was stacking boxes in the 90s when a fan recognized him. The Jewish guy got him gigs at bar mitzvahs. What does a 13 tear old kid know about the Monkees. it was more for the dads and Bubbes. Davie said that he was glad to get the gigs because he got to eat. When they called Mike Nesmith for the Monkee reunion he would not even come to the phone, the reunion was done with only three monkees.
