I have some random rings that I have no interest in anymore.
Nothing fantastic... just some silver (real)... some gold (mostly 10k)... etc... probably just going to get melted.
I just want to get rid of it, but don't want to get ripped off.
Is a reputable jeweler going to give a better price than a pawn shop?
Any suggestions?

I suspect the jeweller will only offer you money for the 24k items, and maybe for the sterling silver if there's an ample amount of it.

I'd start there to move the more valuable pieces. You should check out local vintage shops. Some of them might be into jewellery and be willing to offer you something for the rest of your items.

I had this exact situation recently clearing out my late parents' estate. It worked out well.

Good luck!

I suspect this is how the We buy jewellery biz works. The seller walks in with a ring or necklace that is 18k gold, it weighs one ounce. They will pay 18/24 of the gold price. Less assay charge, less melt charge, and some will even charge a transport charge ( transport to the gold smelter ) They make their profit on all the charges. If the jewellery is salvageable they will not melt it down and polish and/or repair it for resale. Half the value of the jewely is in the craftsmanship of the piece. The seller will not get anywhere near the purchase price of the ring unless it was purchased many decades ago. I am sure most people will be surprised how little they get.

Oh I know I won't get much... I just want to get rid of it and not get ripped off.
Someone I know got rid of a bunch of gold years ago and really she did not get much.

After doing some research:
One 10k gold ring is about 6 grams... according to a couple websites I found, that scrap gold is worth about $110 CAD.
I was wrong on the silver, it is actually a platinum ring, 12 grams... according to the interweb as scrap that might be worth $400 CAD... but I don't know the purity, so that is an unknown factor... also, this ring can possibly be salvageable... cleaned up and resold instead of melted.
I'll start with asking my jeweler... I've bought from him before so I'm sure he'll at least give me his opinion.

$400 is about right. I always liked gold jewelry more than other, white gold is my favorite. It costs more, but it is worth it. I am thinking about buying promise rings for my girlfriend. It is a cool idea for the New Year gift, I got her a really nice necklace for Christmas, and that should be enough, but I know that she wants something for New Year too. I will have to order it fast because I don't want it to be late, that would be a bummer. Girls are actually simple, almost all of them like jewelry, if you have money it's easy.
