Just trying to learn and I cannot play a clean chord because my finger, that is doing the pressing, touches the string beneath the one I am pressing

I have normal fingers - IE not too fat or small - and no matter how I place my finger on the pressed string interference on the other string remains

I am going to give up as my finger tips are so sore and I seem to be making no progress

It amazes me how people play the guitar so effortlessly when I cannot even play one chord. Makes me feel incompetent. Not a nice feeling

I suggest you check out Rick Biato's site.

I played cello, when I switched to guitar I had no problem playing melodies but couldn't put together chords to save my life.

Here's a good place to start.

This guy

Seeing as I seem to have an opinion on everything this morning.....this guy was of my era. Everybody joked about him back in the UK. I learned to play by strumming along with two albums of Lonnie Donnegan's greatest hits. 4 chords and a good time. There is a guy on you tube giving a talk on how you can become good at anything in 20 hours of concentrated study. He then goes on to play the ukelele for 10 minutes, which nobody wanted to hear. I only got so far. As Norm Madconald said about advice his hockey coach gave him, before he gave up..."the only thing I can't teach you is speed"

If you are placing your fingers at an angle you'll hit other strings, place your fingers perpendicular to the strings - I had a big problem with that. Go slow until your fingers adjust.

One of my favorite clips, check out Reina's finger placements...I gotta gets me a tuba girl, they do it better.

Try using a thinner necked guitar
My hands are compact and fingers arent really that long but i use a thin neck and have no issues.
Playing my 12 string is a challenge sometimes but i muddle thru

Odds are you have weak hands. Get some hand strength trainers, and use them. I always have one in my pocket, car, somewhere. You need to train your hands. As other have said, look at the angle of your fingers.
The cello was easy, the guitar was hard. I wish someone would have told about hand trainers when I was bangin my coocozz against the wall in frustration over chords.

Proper technique is important. Make sure your thumb is pressed on the back of the fret board. See if that makes any difference.

Technique can beat natural talent. I learned that from sports.

I cannot recall where my thumb was, that probably means it was on top of the fret board. Makes sense but not something I would think of. Thx.

It's called practice and proper instruction. I was forced to play classical guitar as a kid and hated every minute of it, mostly because I'm a music consumer and not connoisseur. Clear notes begin with a correct position of the instrument in your lap and a correct position of the wrist and thumb. Once you master that, the rest is just repetition and practice. You will benefit from a formal instructions by a classically trained teacher who will be able to correct the flaws. Or you can just play chords- anyone (with fingers) can do that. As for the sore fingertips- after a few weeks they will harden and you'll forget you ever had such problem.

261252 you need a role model.

It shocked me to learn that Michael doesn't think much of his brother's Rudi Schenker's guitar playing. Mark Knopfler said of Rudi, "he's strictly rhythm, he doesn't want to make it cry or sing".

Will take time to develop the callouses that allow you to play without pain.

In addition to trying a model with a thinner neck, you can also try lowering the action (i.e. height of the strings off the fretboard). The lower the strings, the less tension on them and the less effort required to fret a note. More easily, you can try a thinner gauge string. (Any guitar/music store can set up your instrument for you.)
