Both Di Blasio and Cuomo supported the plan but the citizens of Queens rejected it.

They were against the tax incentives that Amazon was being offered, why would such a wealthy company fronted by the world's richest man need tax incentives. Arlington Virginia ponied up $750 million to get Amazon to build there. It works for Arlington being a mostly white affluent neighbourhood. It would be disastrous for Queens, a culturally rich neighbourhood. The gentrification that would follow would destroy the character of the neighbourhood and exacerbate class divide.

...much like the building of the Transmountian Pipeline would radically change Vancouver...and make it poorer.

I read Amazon figured it was entitled to 3 billion in subsidies.

That's fucked up.

I believe the residents of Queens looked at what happened to Cancun after Wal-Mart opened a big box there. They decided they didn't want it happen to them.

The 1% is in denial, they can't accept that the working class now views technology as The Antichrist. It won't be Trump's problem, it will be interesting to see how the US Government of the time handles the crisis of GM going ass up.

In a prior life, I attended a couple of meetings in Citibank's 50 storey green building in Queens. Some (obviously not all) Queens residents want to transform Queens from its working class blue collar roofs into a modern technologically advanced financial center (similar to Canary Wharf in London).

BTW: There are lots of Italians in Queens, not that there is anything wrong with it (unless one is black).

Does this mean that they can still come to Toronto?
No, Bezos doesn't want the competition, he wants a captive market. Amazon would have to contend with Google in Toronto, you know what that would look like....

There's even more Italians in NJ, the North Shore is all dagos and Jews. That's where Bruce Springsteen is from. Not that there's anything wrong with that.

Yes, I believe that. Never had the pleasure of setting foot in New Jersey. Frank Sinatra, Tony Soprano, Jersey Boys, Jersey Shore (The Situation), etc. I think Hoffa is still there encased in concrete.

I have been on foot in Queens which is in the western part of Long Island. Brooklyn is just south of Queens and the Hamptons is in the east. The Hamptons is where the .001% own huge estates.

without 3b in tax cuts
Is the $3 billion real out of pocket money (i.e. do they have to cut a cheque for $3 billion?)?

Are some people arguing that they saved $3 billion cash by not allowing Amazon to relocate to New York?

It's most likely to be low, if not zero, property taxes for a number of years. Maybe a reduction in state incomes, unemployment taxes, etc. That sort of thing. If the land to be used presently is under used with low real estate taxes it's sort of stupid to reject them. Just think of how much tax revenue the employees will generate in sales tax, local, state and federal taxes alone. Not to mention commercial store revenue from employee purchases. I'm not a fan of New York's governor, but he is right they must have lost touch with reality in the city.

Such as shame indeed. Huge opportunity lost.

How will the transmountain do that to Vancouver..especially considering the fact it is already there.... we are talking about 1 tanker every 2 days for the extra capacity or about 4 tankers a week

Vancouver's economy is based on it's diversity, not just demographic but biodiversity. They are already pissed off that the tanker traffic is killing off the population of marine mammals that live there. You could watch seals, dolphins and most of all orcas from the pier of Stanley Park. With even bigger tankers coming in, it would kill off most of the fish life in the Gulf of Vancouver. It's not just a Canadian problem, Puget Sound is a war zone between developers and environmentalists.

The New York Islanders betrayed their Italian fan base when they moved to Brooklyn. They've brought in Lou Lamoriello to fix the problem. Their new stadium is to be built near Belmont Park not far from Uniondale. Ironically, NJ Italians are not into hockey like their Long Island cugini are. Billy Joel and Howard Stern came from Italian neighbourhoods near Uniondale. Joel came from Levittown which is still predominately Italian, Stern came from Roosevelt which became black. His parents refused to move, which has been the source of his shtick ever since.

Ok, I put on my liberal lefty hat and now I understand that the $3 billion is money they would have got and had to forgo if Amazon had moved to New York but now since Amazon is no longer moving to New York they don't have to forgo the $3 billion since there is no Amazon to pay the tax that they would have had to forgo if Amazon had moved to New York. Whew.

LOL, "fulfilment centres"

Most people call them warehouses, but hey, whatever floats your boat.
Hahaha those big corporate assholes and their manipulation of language. Anything to obfuscate the reality of what they're talking about.

"Fulfillment center" sounds like a place you go to find enlightenment, get treated to a relaxing spa, eat world-class food off naked women's asses, and have non-stop sex with 10/10 beauties.

You just know the POS that suggested using the new term to replace 'warehouse' during a company boardroom meeting got a fat raise.
