They should have hired Lou after Toronto let him go. Too late now.

Not sure what anyone can do with this mess of a roster, but I'm at least glad he's not around to make one of his *blockbuster* deals at the deadline to poke another hole.

About time the Taylor Hall trade was brutal
Not all on him but has any team in the history of any sport had so many 1st overall picks in such a short period of time (along with several other top 10 picks) and been so putrid? I think that they had 4 or 5 first picks in about an 8 year period. (I didn't actually check.)

I agree but he was their next best pick behind Connor, he's much better than Yakapov, or Nugent-Hopkins, Eberle, Puljarvi and Draisatl, although Drasaitl is very good too.

The Oilers would have had to pay him Mike Babcock money for that to happen. The Oilers are so clueless they probably didn't even consider it. That's the problem too many players from the dynasty era thinking they know better than anyone else. Exhibit A: Craig MacTavish is still Vice-President of Hockey Operations. WTF, he's the club Richard Peddie. I seriously doubt they can salvage the season...that's Peddie mentality. Unless they purge the Old Guard they will continue to wallow.

What chance did Chiarelli actually have?

don't recall any trades he did that he won? 30 Another Duuuh move, NHL game experience goalie for $4.5M/year
Oilers should have kept him and demoted him to cleaning the washrooms after the games.

You probably should next time, their 2 poor picks were rated number one and any team would have picked them. Yak and hopkins were very weak drafts and hopkins hasn't had that bad of a career. People who say eberle was a bust are clowns. He was a 22nd overall pick who has the third most career points from that draft.

13, 14, 15 picks were nurse, draisitle and mcdavid. Their worst pick was yakapov who every team would have taken the same place. Too much is made of their poor picks, they picked who was available and rated highest.

I said that I hadn't checked the number of 1st overall picks but it looks like I was in the ballpark.

And if you read my post carefully, once again my statement was absolutely correct, in that they had so many 1st overall picks and remained putrid. I never said that they made bad picks. They clearly just didn't know how to use that talent and/or were unable to get the proper supporting cast which would have allowed that talent to flourish.

My statement stands as accurate with no corrections necessary.

The Yakupov year wasn't so bad. Reilly, Dumba, Trouba, Filip Forsberg and Andre Vasilevsky were all players the Oilers could have drafted.

The Oilers didn't want the heat they would have gotten by drafting those players, Yakupov was the safe choice.

Burke said yak was offended that the leafs had the gall to even talk to him as they were picking number 5, that's how arrogant he was. You are looking at it now and name picking, only Reilly might have been a legitimate option at the time. Overall weak draft with those names, good but not great players mostly.

Yak was in Ryan Leaf mode. Arrogance gets you nowhere, fame went to Eugenie Bouchard's head. On the flip-side, Bianca Andreescu came in with a whimper at the start of her pro career. The two recently met at a tournament in Newport Beach California - Genie lost 6-2, 6-0.

Mark Hunter will be ineffective as long as the Dynasty Regime has control. I have a hunch that some of the moves Chiarelli made were not his choices. More than likely Mark Messier will become GM.
Messier is legend hockey player but that's where it stops. The Oilers need to think outside the box and stop with the old boys club. Heck they should even consider Tim Hunter and few former Calgary Flames.
