The TTC is calling for a 10-cent fare hike in its proposed 2019 budget, which amounts to a three-per-cent increase.

If approved, the fare increase would be on all fare types except adult cash fares, which will remain unchanged at $3.25. Children under 12 years old will continue to ride for free.

The TTC budget comes one day after Mayor John Tory announced that the city would be adding $162 million to this year’s TTC capital budget in order to push up the completion date of the downtown relief line by two years.

The budget still has to be approved by the TTC board before it’s sent to city council for final approval in March.

TTC Chair Jaye Robinson has indicated that she opposes any kind of fare increase.

If approved, this would be the eighth hike in 10 years. The last fare increase was a 10-cent hike in 2017.

That money would cover a variety of transit needs, including new vehicle purchases, transit upgrades, electrical and signal upgrades, as well as constructing new buildings.

The proposed budget will go before the board next week.

Back in the good old days, you could stock on tokens at the old price before the rate increase. Doubt that is possible with the Presto Card.

The tokens are being discontinued at the end of this year.

I don't use public transit enough to warrant a Presto card IMO but will have to put more plastic into this world by getting one when they eliminate tokens. I plan to donate any excess tokens I have near the end of the year to a homeless person.

That's kind of you but don't wait too long to donate because the tokens are not usable after 2019. One advantage of the Presto card is to be able to use the 2 hour window to hop on and hop off.

Why, they don't have to go home?

That's why I always hit the button on those machines and get a chit before hopping on the subway. I believe the street car drivers still give out chits as well and my GO ticket has the time on it. The only advantage is less paper, which I recycle when I get home.

And it should stay that way. Tax payers shouldn't have to flip the bill for public transit.
I agree. $6 - $7 a day to get to and from work in the city is nothing.

They should increase it to $5 one way and pay for the relief line.

With my car in the shop this past fall, I used the TTC several times to get to work. Does anyone pay to get on the streetcars anymore? Everyone enters through the rear/middle door, and rarely does anyone tap their Presto card.

Cars and driving lessons do not grow on trees. Especially in Ontario where drive test centered are known to fail people to make money on retesting

Nope...

Two-hour transfer available to PRESTO card customers only.

How it works:

Tap your PRESTO card on a card reader when you enter a subway station or board a vehicle.
Your fare will be deducted and a transfer will be applied to your card. Your transfer is valid for two hours.
Hop on and off the system or switch directions at any point in your journey.
Tap your PRESTO card on a reader each time you enter a subway station and when you board a bus or streetcar. As long as you’re within two hours from your first tap, you won’t be charged another fare.

NOTE: The two-hour transfer does not apply to ticket, token or cash customers. Our same transfer rules apply, customers must be travelling in a continuous one-way direction with no stop overs.

PRESTO is great. There's a onetime charge of $6.00 and you can have it automatically reload by way of a credit card. You never have to carry exact change, rides are less than the cash amount, worry about losing a transfer (which can result in a fine if asked to produce proof of payment) and allows you to take advantage of the two hour hop on, hop off feature.

Hmmm, shows you how little I know about public transit in TO. I'm usually travelling one way to the hotel or event and one way back after, which takes more than two hours, especially given I do a minimum 2 hour outcall to the Tdot. I still don't like the idea of putting more plastic into the world but will have to switch over eventually.

I think the day is coming soon when the TTC (like NYC) will no longer accept cash.

Question: Will the old tokens be a "collector" item like Bobby Orr's rookie cards?

Because currently tokens are often giving freely to people in need for multiple organizations, can be food banks, shelters, hospitals, rehab center etc. 7$ a day for someone that is on OW/ODSP/OSAP is alot.
Presto card cost 10$ to start with and then you need to add the money directly at shoppers/the subway or if online it take over 24 hours to get onto the card. I was part of a school program over the summer that stopped giving tokens to less privileges folx and they had to keep all receipt for something like 28 days to show that they actuallly attended, so they had to pay close to 100$ from the 750 or whatever it is nowadays from OW before being reimburse.
