Trafficking conjures up sex-slaves being transported in containers.
However, most come over here knowingly of their own free will. Prostitution is rampant in China, and an offer to come to Canada is like hitting the jackpot: more money, nicer clients, expenses paid trip and an opportunity to save a lot more money than doing the same in China. A prostitute caught in China usually gets one year in a not so pleasant jail, plus the outing and shaming that takes place; plus, many wind up as slaves by cruel criminal gangs. Those caught here are treated like victims and offered counseling.
The only trafficking that takes place is the moving of an illegal activity from one place to another. Doesn't mean that the participants are unwilling or that they are necessarily mistreated. I've found that those volunteers get here through word of mouth from those who have done this before.
This guy is not going to get a fair trial. He's not going to be able to afford a lawer, so he will get a public defender who makes a lot more money negotiating a plea bargains, than actually going to court. They are going to pile on the sentences so that the prosecutor can bolster his political career by being tough on crime, especially morality crime.
