Layton would not have been out of place as a perpetually self serving politician on Veep. He may have been a good man on a personal level (and how can any Terb member criticize his love of a good hard massage), but his politics were for sale - nothing more evident than in 2006 and 2009 and 2011. All talk, then he did Harper’s bidding. In the long run, how did that work out for the party?

As a side note, I get involved regularly during elections and have worked as a scrutineer a few times both Provincially and Federal elections for both the Liberals and Conservatives. In my experience, NDP volunteers in the GTA are the most unfriendly, miserable group of people I have ever met. They typically look at other volunteers like the enemy and they often try to circumvent the rules by wearing orange and then glare when they are told to change as if somebody turned them in (when it’s the polling station officials job to tell them). It’s happened every time I’ve scrutineered.
In the ridings (Mississauga, Etobicoke) in which I have done scrutineering I have yet to see an NDP scrutineer. The Liberal ones I have encountered have been generally unfriendly but that is sort of expected. Particularly in ridings which are closely contested.

I think the chaos that is occurring right now in the NDP benefits the Liberals the most. I sincerely hope that they (NDP) can get their act together before the fall election.

Jack didn't trigger the non-confidence vote against Martin to help Harper. He thought he could win. He was wrong , but he did pretty well and eventually may have succeeded if he hadn't got sick and died. Are you gonna blame him for that too?

Actually Jack’s dying preserved his legacy from critical review. But since you brought it up - arguably it was irresponsible (even selfish) for Layton to continue as leader when his cancer returned. A more orderly transition would have prevented the problems Mulcair had with the widespread internal party feelings that he wasn’t “true to NDP principles”. (Unlike Harper’s best stealth weapon 2006 - 2011, Jack Layton.... LOL). I’ve had the experience to have actually met Layton on a business trip for which he was a part of a municipal team representing Toronto (back when he was a City councilman). My first impression of him was how he was in business class (sipping champagne!) while his colleagues were back in coach. That forever sums up Layton, for me.

The NDP breakthrough in Québec in 2011 was really the implosion of the Bloc - Layton got far more credit than deserved for that.

Grasping defeat from the jaws of victory is a bizarre NDP talent. Due to an extraordinary confluence of unanticipated historical events they had inherited a plum; a once in a lifetime opportunity. (1) Largest number of seats, EVER, in Quebec and
(2) miracle of miracles, an NDP govt. in ultra-CON Alberta. Instead of seizing this opportunity to build upon, what did they accomplish? They cannibalized their own leader, that bearded chap from Outremont, and arguably their best parliamentary debater. What a pity.
