Any analysis of sports that factors in for kids the cost and the chance of injury and the fun factor, will lead parents and kids to choose sports in the following order;

soccer, basketball, baseball, hockey, football --------and in the US it might be slightly different in north or south states.

When Canada was the dominant country, it didn't win every year either. The US was in the final. Where was Canada? Over the past ten years, which country has won more world junior gold medals? Look at the long term trends, not one specific result. Have you looked at U18 results? The US has won 7 of the last 10 years. Canada has won once. Not to mention minor hockey registration in the US is now higher than Canada. Not that long ago, it was less than half the Canadian number. The shift has started but this is just the beginning. I don't see how you can deny the long term trend.
