<font size="4">It's Asian Nicole, your sweet Euro loving babe. :) After visited Ghent and Bruges, I was getting very excited to visit Leuven-the eighth largest city in Belgium.

It is located about 25 kilometres (16 miles) east of Brussels, Belgium, known for its breweries. Leuven is home to the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, the largest and oldest university of the Low Countries and the oldest Catholic university still in existence. The related university hospital of UZ Leuven is one of the largest hospitals in Europe. The city is also known for being the headquarters of Anheuser-Busch InBev, the world's largest brewer and one of the five largest consumer-goods companies in the world.

Stella Artois is a Belgian pilsner of between 4.8 and 5.2% ABV which was first brewed by Brouwerij Artois (the Artois Brewery) in Leuven, Belgium, in 1926.

<font size="4">The City Hall of Leuven is a landmark building which is located on a central square. It is a 15th-century town hall with its tall spires. The building is decorated with hundreds of statues of local figures, biblical characters and saints.

Statues in canopied niches are distributed all over the building. The corbels supporting the statues are carved with Biblical scenes in high relief. While the niches and corbels are original with the building, the 236 statues themselves are relatively recent, dating from after 1850. Those of the first floor represent personages of importance in the local history of the city; those of the second, patron saints and symbolic figures; those of the third, the Counts of Leuven and Dukes of Brabant from various ages.

Wow...What an amazing architecture!! I felt that I fell in love with this marvelous building immediately as soon as I saw it!

<font size="4">St Peter's Church in Leuven is on the city's Grote Markt (market square), opposite the ornate Town Hall. Built mainly in the 15th century in Brabantine Gothic style, the church has a cruciform floor plan and a low bell tower that has never been completed. It is 93 metres long. St. Peter’s Church houses a “Last Supper” by the Flemish Primitive painter Dieric Bouts.

Stunning! The square and the buildings take you to a place which feels like past centuries' wonderland. Must see experience!!

<font size="4">The Katholieke Universiteit Leuven (English: Catholic University of Leuven) is a research university in the Dutch-speaking town of Leuven in Flanders, Belgium. It was founded at the center of the historic town of Leuven in 1425, was considered the largest, oldest and most prominent university in Belgium. KU Leuven consistently ranks among the top 100 universities in the world.

The KU campus sponsored the National Belgian Beach Volleyball Championship during my visit to Leuven.</font>

<font size="4">Leuven was founded in the 9th century around a fortress built by a German emperor against the Normans, and it became important in the 11th century as the residence of the counts of Leuven, afterward (1190) the dukes of Brabant.

Leuven was a cloth-weaving centre and one of the largest cities in Europe in the 14th century. When the Catholic University of Leuven was founded in 1425--the first university in the Netherlands, it became renowned for its Roman Catholic teaching. Leuven is still a major cultural centre and is also an agricultural market. Its industries historically have included food processing, brewing, etc.

Fons Sapientiae, nicknamed “Fonske,” is a well-loved resident of Leuven. The whimsical statue is an ode to the city’s rich student life. The name translates to “Source of Wisdom,” and the water the man pours atop his head is supposedly meant to symbolize knowledge flowing into his brain. An intricate math formula is scrawled across the front cover of the book he clutches that, when solved, forms the Dutch word for “happiness.”</fond></center>

<font size="4">After visited Leuven, I took a train and went straight to the second largest city of Belgium-Antwerp. Antwerp is the most populous city proper in Belgium. It is about 40 km north of Brussels. Antwerp is a port city on Belgium’s River Scheldt, with history dating to the Middle Ages.

The Port of Antwerp is one of the biggest in the world, ranking second in Europe and within the top 20 globally. The city is also known for its diamond industry and trade. Antwerp was also the place of the world's oldest stock exchange building, originally built in 1531 and re-built in 1872. Antwerp’s Flemish Renaissance architecture is typified by the Grote Markt, a central square in the old town.

<font size="4">Antwerp Central railway station was constructed between 1895 and 1905. The stone clad terminus buildings, with a vast dome above the waiting room hall were designed by Louis Delacenserie. The viaduct into the station is also a notable structure designed by local architect Jan Van Asperen. A plaque on the north wall bears the name Middenstatie.

The station is now widely regarded as the finest example of railway architecture in Belgium, although the extraordinary eclecticism of the influences on Delacenserie's design had led to a difficulty in assigning it to a particular architectural style.

In 2009 the American magazine Newsweek judged Antwerp-Central the world's 4th greatest train station. In 2014 the British-American magazine Mashable awarded Antwerp-Central the first place for the most beautiful railway station in the world.</font>

<font size="4">The Cathedral of Our Lady is a Roman Catholic cathedral in Antwerp, Belgium. Today's see of the Diocese of Antwerp started in 1352 and, although the first stage of construction was ended in 1521, has never been 'completed'. In Gothic style, its architects were Jan and Pieter Appelmans. It contains a number of significant works by the Baroque painter Peter Paul Rubens, as well as paintings by artists such as Otto van Veen, Jacob de Backer and Marten de Vos.

The belfry of the cathedral is included in the Belfries of Belgium and France entry in the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Wow...There are no words to describe this masterpiece. A true beauty and jaw dropping cathedral in the heart of Antwerp. Amazing visit as quite a few paintings of Rubens inside makes it a pleasant visit!! It is a must-see!!

<font size="4">Peter Paul Rubens (1577 –1640) was a Flemish artist. He was born in Siegen in Germany, but from the age of 10 he lived and went to school in Antwerp.

He is considered the most influential artist of Flemish Baroque tradition. Rubens's highly charged compositions reference erudite aspects of classical and Christian history. His unique and immensely popular Baroque style emphasized movement, color, and sensuality, which followed the immediate, dramatic artistic style promoted in the Counter-Reformation.

In addition to being one of the most talented artists in Europe, whose work outsold other artists at the time, he was also knighted, was hired for various commissions for diplomatic figures as well as church pieces, and even after his death, his fame continued to grow in the art world.

When I was in Antwerp, I had a chance to visit the Rubens House which was his former home and studio. It is now a museum.

The interior courtyard

I particularly liked this painting.:) Btw, above those paintings displayed inside the Cathedral of Our Lady are all Ruben's paintings.

<font size="4">St. Paul's Church is located in the old city center of Antwerp, just a few steps from the Scheldt river, in a district where formerly sailors used to live. The church is named after the patron saint of the Dominicans, St. Paul. Its exterior is mainly Gothic with a Baroque tower while the interior is characterised by its rich Baroque decoration.

Wow...St. Paul's Church is a beautiful church! Thanks for the amazing artworks inside as well as outside. Incredible carving of the woodwork decorates this 16th century church. A visit would most definitely be worthwhile. The building itself is architecturally stunning! :thumb:</font>
