Two benchmark U.S. stock indexes are careening toward a historically bad December.

Both the Dow Jones Industrial Average and the S&P 500 are on pace for their worst December performance since 1931, when stocks were battered during the Great Depression. The Dow and S&P 500 are down 7.8 percent and 7.6 percent this month, respectively.

December is typically a very positive month for markets. The Dow has only fallen during 25 Decembers going back to 1931.

The S&P 500 averages a 1.6 percent gain for December, making it typically the best month for the market, according to the Stock Trader's Almanac.

While the S&P 500 began dissemination in 1950, the performance data was backtested through 1928. It's worth noting that historically, the second half of December tends to see gains.

Hate to say it, but 2018 will go down as a year where a LOT of money was made betting on the stupidity of Trump policies. His trade/tariff wars will go down in history as one of the classic "shoot self in foot" policy blunders of all time. Trump chose to go to war with every trading partner - in fact his idiotic section 232 Steel Tariffs are still in place for Canada and are STILL hurting US industry. And remember - Trump grew the deficit to over $1 Trillion in GOOD TIMES. IF the economy does turn with any significance, how and where will Bone Spurs find the money to stimulate the economy? He's already in danger of running out by the 24th of the month and the idiot is threatening a shutdown over funding for the wall he campaigned would be paid by Mexico. Oh, and even after Weds upcoming hike, Fed Funds will only be 2.5%...

It's a good thing for Trump that his supporters are.... well, kind of stupid.

This is on Trump with his trade policies/war, but there are also other factors at play all the major indexes are down as well as oil and bond markets, this usually doesn't happen all at once, housing starts are also down, maybe the market is signaling a recession.

The market's been rising since 2009 - you just didn't notice. All Trump did was pour gasoline (borrowed gasoline) on a smouldering fire in Jan 2017 then bragged about the resulting bonfire. His record deficits are bad enough - then he started fucking up on trade beginning in March. The idiotic Trump fans who were here daily through 2017 talking about the rise and who thought that Trump knew what he was doing are the ones who have been quiet all year. As for where I've been - I've been pretty consistently telling people to trade this market all year. By trade I meant sell into rises and buy dips and don't hold major positions (long or short) over weekends and holidays because the President is a moron who tweets. If you have a profit - take it. If you're holding a loss - book it. I also made a few posts in Jan as well as early summer advising to buy volatility because it was cheap with the VIX near single digits at one point with a record deficit corrupt moron in the Whitehouse fucking up global trade and mid-terms on the horizon. It made no sense. An easy layup double. You'll never get insurance that cheap again - so I hope some people took advantage of it.
