A Canadian physicist has received one of science's highest honors.

Donna Strickland, a professor at the University of Waterloo, is one of three winners of this year's Nobel Prize for Physics and collected the award with a big smile in Sweden today.

The Nobel committee says Strickland and French scientist Gerard Mourou will each receive a quarter of the US$1.01 million prize for their joint work on laser physics.

Strickland's win makes her only the third woman to win the Physics prize, and the first Canadian female scientist to do so.

Her prize-winning work was conducted in the early 1980s while she was completing her PhD under Mourou's supervision.

She and Mourou discovered Chirped Pulse Amplification, a technique that underpins today's short-pulse, high-intensity lasers, which have become a key part of corrective eye surgeries.

As of 2017, Nobel Prizes have been awarded to 902 individuals, of whom 203 or 22.5% were Jews, although the total Jewish population comprises less than 0.2% of the world's population. This means the percentage of Jewish Nobel laureates is at least 112.5 times or 11,250% above average.

Number of Canadians 26

Number of 1.6 billion Muslims who have won Noble is 10 with 3 in the sciences

I asked myself the same questions. What would anybody care about their religion? I suppose it could only be someone who feels insecure about their own religion or ethnicity.

How about the ratio of women to men in employment positions?

How about the ratio of blacks involved in violent incidents with the police in Toronto as opposed to the rest of the population?

We do these types of comparisons all the time.

Why is it questioned because religion is the parameter but not questioned when it has to do with gender or race.

And maybe someone is proud of the accomplishments of their religion as opposed to feeling insecure. Just sayin'.

Point is not subtle. Muslims outnumber the Jews 1000 fold yet have contributed far less to knowledge. Nothing against Muslims, as they are just as capable, just their religion. How many Muslim geniuses have been suppressed by religion? How much more would we know if Islam never was created? You can say the same thing about Christianity and their history of intelletual oppression.

Why such a small minority of the human race has contributed such vast knowledge to humanity is a very interesting topic. I suspect it is cultural. Jews respect intellectual achievment. In Canada hckey players are the superstars

Knowledge is cumulative. Einstein built on scientific theories that had been developed by others before him all the way back to Galileo. I read your comment simply as an attempt to draw overly general conclusions about religious groups. I am not a Muslim but anybody with some knowledge of scientific history would admit that Muslims have contributed also a lot in mathematics, astrology, geography, and science to name a few areas. The Nobel Prizes have been awarded since 1901 but we can all admit that scientific knowledge and history dates back for millennia. There were no Nobel Prizes awarded during the enlightenment period or the renaissance. In regards to the last 100 years, I suppose that you can say that Jews have been successful in academia (universities), an institution and concept created by the Catholic church.

Culture, religion and politics = root of most of our problems that divide, control, and exploits us. We are all just as much part of these problems as the people that we tend to blame for our problems.

People are too selfish to live without these control mechanisms. They are too fucking needy to blood suck off of others for their our own selfish needs. There is a universal solution but people are too fucking selfish to embrace it. They will get bored and lose their purpose they will go depressed, they need the pain the hurt the excitement of false power over others. Its a vicious circle.

We do it to ourselves and thats why it really hurts. But its easy so fucking easy to point fingers and blame other now lol the irony

Wow I fee so proud to be Canadian reading this.

What an accomplishment where some of the greats stood and have changed the world forever.

It's always nice to hear positive achievements by Canadians on the international stage! This is good news indeed.

Bs, Galileo's work was built on what Ibn al-Haytham, an Arab mathematician, astronomer and physicist who scientifically proved that the earth was round. Considered the father of modern optics, Isaac Newton would have had to start from scratch without him. Also modern mathematics is based on Arab numbers, imagine how clunky equations would be with Roman numerals.

I'm proud of Ms. Strickland, Waterloo is a hotbed of the physical sciences - even Stephen Hawking taught there.

Here's an interesting bit Nobel trivia. Bruno Pontecorvo, a protege of Enrico Fermi, was supposed to get a Nobel for his work on neutrinos. He was also a Russian spy, got burned and fled to the USSR. It broke Fermi's heart, he died soon after.

You prove my point. Until fundamental Islam took over, the Arab culture contributed geniuses to the humanities then nothing. Math was thought to be the work of the devil. The only math they contributed was the proper point to bow to mecca. This is actually a difficult math problem considering the earth is a sphere

Indeed. Name famous hockey players and the average Canadian has no problem. Name a Canadian Nobel Prize winner and duh?

I think we can all agree that there are some serious problems with Islam created by fundamentalism which has held Islam back from joining the 21st century. But, I would say that the problem is also political because the whole region is controlled by despots who curtail the freedom of their citizens. Sadly, the combination of these two elements with the lack of solid (accountable) institutions will continue to plague the region for the next century, at least.

I think the way you framed your initial comment was not very clear about the impact of fundamentalist Islam on Muslim societies but was written as a blanket statement without any context.
