I liked biway, great deals. Bargain Harolds too.

BiWay had around 250 shops across the country and operated for more than 30 years before shutting down in 2001.

Retail veteran Mal Coven, 89, who helped build the brand, hopes to resurrect the name with a new 7,500 square feet "BiWay $10 Store" scheduled to open in August in Toronto.

“BiWay is a legacy brand,” Coven told CTV News.

“We carried a lot of brands, but never junk. This will be a new concept store with branded, quality goods.”

Coven, who lives in Toronto, hopes the BiWay name will give him a competitive advantage in the new retail landscape.

“One of my rules was that I never bought anything that I would be ashamed to bring home to my family,” Coven said, The new chain concept will see everything in stock sold for $10 or under.

With tens of thousands of dollars worth of goods ready and the backing of investors, Coven aims to open four more stores by the end of 2020.

“We’ve never had preparation like this for any BiWay store,” he told CTV News.

“I’m excited about this. The store will be a success, no question.”

The stores will stock children’s wear, household furnishings, mens and ladies wear, toys, toiletries and food.

Coven, the son of Russian Jewish immigrants, grew up in Boston and his late wife Miriam was from Montreal.

In 1961, he received a lucky break when his brother-in-law Abe Fish invited him to Toronto to become a partner in two stores, which would lead to the creation of BiWay.

With the departure of Target and sears, and the success of Walmart, he just might find a niche.

I pretty much dressed in byway clothes through elementary and first two years of high school.

I have good memories of that time didn't have much back then which made it more special.

Guess when you can afford almost everything, things are not as special.

I remember "biway" being a slur kids would use back in the day.

"Where'd you get your clothes from? Biway???" *crowd of laughter*

Awesome. We need a bargain store especially since Target ruined what was left of Zellers.

I remember bi-way as being a store full of cheap items. Kind of like a dollar store before there were dollar stores. Woolco and Woolworths were a step above, then Sears/Bay/Eatons.

Yeap, but I remember being really happy with the stuff I got, because I knew how hard my parents worked for it. Mom was in school during the day and cleaning part time at night. Dad working full time and part time at night. But the weekends where always so special, little money but lots of fun. Playing soccer or catch, or hicking or going to a park with my parents. It was a great time in my life. We were talking about it the other day.
A dozen boiled eggs, a loaf of bread, a 2 littre of coke and drove as far as we could afford.

Now everything is so different, just spent 7 days at a 5 star resort in Cabo in November, followed by 7 days in Cuba at a 5 star resort, which is really 3, but the best they have, and my kids told me they didnt like it, they expected better. Which made me sad, them not being able to really appreciate the experience.

I'm sure that they could open up a hipster store and charge a mint for bags we were too embarrassed to be seen with.

anyone remember Traxx branded shoes from either biway or bargain harolds? The soles offered no traction whatsoever and the even had hitops.

I bought my first pair of Levi's at the Biway in Brampton. Until then I was wearing what ever my parents could afford which was usually a 5 dollar pair of pants from Woolco. (not even jeans).
