It started off by anxiously waiting for my Ancestry DNA kit to arrive in my mailbox! Once I received the kit, you spit into the little DNA tube thing and just follow instructions (super easy) and then mail it back in their pre stamped envelope! I had gotten an email once they received my DNA.. Said about 6-8 weeks for results. Not going to lie, I was SUPER impatient and just so excited to see my results. For those of you who havent met me, throughout my life, people have asked if I am Indian, Native, part black/caribbean, middle eastern and others... I know I'm Italian but why does everyone have such a strong opinion about my race?! Ok so finally my results came in yesterday!!!! I am 96% ITALIAN (Sicilian) and 4% greek/Albanian!!! I wasn't shocked about the Italian... but the 4% of Greek/Albanian caught me by surprise. Super weird but awesome!

This process was SOOOO EXCITING! Yes it was on the expensive side, I think I paid about $140?? So if you're interested in getting your DNA history then maybe purchase the kit when its on sale.
Has anyone on the forum ever done the DNA ancestry test?? If so, what were your results and how did you feel about them?? (Sorry if there is a thread about this already! But I didnt see one.)

I'm excited to hear your results and opinions!!

My results were pretty boring, nothing that I didn't know by talking to my family.

Yeah, too many data breaches out there to count. If giant companies like Marriott, Sony, Facebook, Air Canada, etc. can't keep personal info secure there's no chance these DNA companies can do it any better.

I hope you are not offended when I say I'm surprised there was no Arabic. Those nasty Muslim Arabs invaded Sicily way back and "mingled" with the locals.

Can they get my banking info from my DNA?

Agreed. Now your DNA is in a database somewhere for all time. Who knows? Maybe this is all a front for some government body. Maybe this company will get bought out by Facebook, Google or the Chinese and your DNA will be part of your profile.

I'll be surprised if there was no Mongolian in the DNA of
those of European, Russian and Arabic origin.

Yes, they can splice together account numbers and pin codes from your DNA. :frusty:

Are you willing to give a company personal info including first, last name, home address, credit card, etc. Then you're going to trust that company to build and maintain profile on you from a huge number of sources like census, marriage, and immigration? Prime target for identify thieves.

Exactly what I was thinking. I think that they can determine your fingerprint pattern from your DNA and then match it up to the residue found on keys punched at an ATM.

Being scientifically accurate or not, the fear of potential data breach has been one major reason why many people I know are too skeptical to explore it (no pun intended to explorezip)!

Fact of the matter is that security is not given enough attention these days. What should concern people is that they are allowing a third-party to compile a whole lot of personal information about them and their family. What I don't get is the need to know this information. So now I know that I'm X% of each nationality. So now what? I think basketcase put it best, how about talking with family members to get this info?

The DNA is not what's important. It's all the personal info and your credit card info that's attached to your profile.

An unintended consequence or benefit, depending on how you look at it, of giving your DNA is that it helps solve cold cases and usually for Murder. A few cold cases in the US have been solved by linking familial DNA and then tracing the family tree to people associated with the victim. This is scary in one sense and it is not being used for what you provided it for but does put murderers behind bars. I think the practice has since been halted to share the DNA with crime labs as the question of access is being questioned.

But you are only giving them your DNA. They need to find a way to match it up with your banking info. The fingerprints on the ATM would be the link.

No you're not only giving them your DNA. You're minimally giving them your e-mail, first name, last name, credit card info and I assume home address. That is all someone needs to do damage because it's all in the same database. Farming fingerprints and trying to match them to banking information would be a ridiculous waste of resources and no hacker would do that.

Ancestry uses your DNA sample to collect information about your family history in a single profile. That profile now becomes a one-stop shop to steal lots of information about you.
