I say that AA wins a WS within 3 years.

JD is going to be a huge salary bite with no guarantees of good health. I hope it works out for them, but it's not a deal I would make.

Me neither that's a lot of money for a guy who can't stay healthy, they have Camargo to play 3b , he's young and had a good year

The amount is mitigated by the fact that it is just one year. If it is a mistake it is very short term. It will not be an albatross. I also suspect that AA has done some due diligence as to his health status and I think they had a good relationship so (maybe I am naïve here) there would be some honest communication.

I always love AA's bold moves. Even if they didn't work out on the field he kept the fan base interested and asses in the seats. A slightly different approach than some other unnamed executives who give their fans nothing to be excited about. Unless they find slashing payroll exciting.

AA is taking a gamble that Donaldson will be somewhat resembling his performance in his MVP year. A couple of things in AA's favor, Donaldson should be healed from last year's ailments and he won't be playing on turf which should lessen the chances of re-injury. If his bat is there it is a win and should he return to what he was defensively AA looks like a genius. As Shack said it is a one year contract and there is no long term massive contract on the books.

I wonder if deep down AA and possibly Donaldson see this as a shot at Shapiro and his management team?

Doubt it. Atlanta needs a third baseman, and JD is the best option out there. Atlanta's window is now so no harm in a gamble with JD. I would expect AA is to professional to make a move like this just out of spite.

Not just out of spite, that would be stupid and I think AA is far from that, but ya know that warm fuzzy feeling you get when a plan comes together and that zaps someone you really don't care for......kind of a win and gotcha moment, not necessarily a planned thing, but a very pleasant side effect! LOL

I do not know much about the Braves save for the fact that they are a young and upcoming team. Donaldson brings a positive attitude and work ethic that will only help the team. In 2015 and 2016 his leadership helped propel the Jays to back-to-back AL finals.

Smart move by AA and as Shack mentioned, AA is not a stranger to bold moves, especially ones that will fill the stadium and increase the fan base.

A one year deal basically puts the onus on JD to show he still has gas left in the tank. If he has a miserable year or is hit with injuries any chance at one more big contract is history.

Heard he wasn't well liked in Cleveland. Nobody else wanted him, why pay him so much?
