Let's see how this plays out. 6 months wait time? This will be interesting to watch how Mexico reacts.

A provocative headline, but the actual article is quite sympathetic to the Central Americans.

Did you read it all the way through?
Of course it's sympathetic. The question is though is how racist and deplorable are the protesters?

Not being an expert on Mexican culture and politics, I was undecided between "they were mobilized by some political boss for his own ends" and "they are simple folks who are genuinely pissed off by people who look different".

Of course, they could be both - like the TERB righties.

They're getting a taste of their own medicine...

You mean this is karma for Mexico refusing Trump's reasonable demand that they pay for the wall?

Judging from the comments printed by the newspaper it would seem that they consider the Honduras refugees as a political stunt.

They mention the Haitians and how well they integrated.

This group may well intergrate as well. But it sounds like the locals as getting fed up as well.

Well that's understandable if they are going to have 1,000's of outsiders camping in their city.

So what's your solution?.... Send all those little Honduran kiddies back to be killed by MS-13?

Personally I think it's to give favored trading status to these nations to improve their economies. Assist with aid. And work with their police to tackle the corruption.

In other words create conditions where it's alot less likely they will want to leave.

Because while thousands are easily absorbed are millions? And is it fair on the other hand to leave millions in those conditions.

Take away all the benefits China gets and transfer them. They don't need them. Hell let them step up now that they want to be a player and supply aid.

And your last sentence? Outsiders? Sounds like an excuse to oppose the concept of sanctuary cities as well........

How do you know what's going on in Honduras? There aren't many reporters there, it might be possible but it's just as feasible they are using it as an excuse to get into the U.S. It's MS-13 not 17 unless that's a new gang you discovered

Ah, but listen to what people in Northern Mexico are actually saying not merely reporters from the L.A. Times.

Listen, if I was a carpenter - like the guy who was interviewed - and a few thousand transients moved into my neighbourhood, I wouldn't be happy either.

See my previous post #9 above.

So what's your point? That they shouldn't be allowed to claim asylum because a carpenter in Mexico is pissed off at them?

Now we're thinking. The US can absorb these initial caravans. Trump and GOP may whine and play to their racist base; but there is no question that the US can absorb them.

There is an issue as to whether sheer lawlessness and break down of law and order is a legal ground for a valid refugee claim BTW. Trump and his idiots probably don't recognize that there's a legal out here for them. The gays and transexuals OTOH likely have a valid asylum claim because their risk is personalized.

The larger problem is that the US cannot absorb caravans indefinitely and the caravans will keep coming because Hondurans are desperate and fleeing a catastrophic environment. Eventually, there is going to have to be US intervention in these countries to police and stabilize them. The GOP avoids any of these discussions because it is easier to use these unfortunate people as bait for their racist supporters. But any HONEST discussion has to go into these areas and explore them.

So far, the entire "caravan" debate is just another grotesque example of the failure of leadership of the Trump WH and the GOP congress.
