The citizens of Calgary have spoken, there will be no Olympic Games in 2026.

They should be proud of themselves. They chose fiscal responsibly over IOC glory, it was an emphatic FU to a corrupt and gluttonous outfit. The head of the Calgary Olympic committee said the process wasn't fair, she should have a doughnut and STFU. Every Olympic Games since LA 1984 has been deep in the red. The citizens of Vancouver are on the hook for over $ 6 billion, it would have helped if the IOC didn't take such a big skim of the revenues. The only other Olympic Games that almost broke even was Barcelona 1992, but they treated it as an infrastructure upgrade instead of a sporting event. Seoul is still paying for their Olympics, has Montreal come out of debt yet?

So let the IOC suck dictatorship cock - they're good at it.

Oh great. Just for the sake of saving a few billion dollars and avoiding all the inconvenience and logistics of having your city overrun by hundreds of thousand of people for two weeks, they are going to deprive the rest of the country of the excitement of having the Olympics in our country where we have a better choice of doing well, like the last time.

Those unpatriotic ingrates. Sheesh.

Vancouver has gotten gun shy.

After getting looted by the IOC, they didn't want to be a dance partner for FIFA. I don't believe the full cost of their Olympics has been revealed yet. Sochi cost $86 billion, most of that was stolen and put into off-shore bank accounts.

Yes, it took them over 30 years. Mind you the stadium is still an on going cost.

Here is a link to a very interesting article about the history of the bid through to recent times.

https://www.theguardian.com/cities/...over-1976-olympic-games-broke-montreal-canada

Similar to the IOC it was shrouded in corruption.

As much as I enjoy the spirit of the Olympics and sharing the pride of a nation, the costs of these games is obscene.

Fortunately the people of the world are waking up to this and simply saying "NO!". Good for Calgary and I hope that trends continues around the planet. There are enough stadiums and places in the world to host these games every four years. I see no reason why different events cannot be held across the globe at different venues. No reason to invest billions into infrastructure that will simply rust/rot away once the 3 week gala is over.

Definitely, I agree with the thrust of your post, but I gotta believe that as the world has changed so much since Munich, a huge part of the increase in costs is SECURITY.

Is there anybody advocating to decrease security to lower costs?

London 2012 was pretty successful. Huge and horrible part of the capital was transformed. Lots of sports facilities now being used as well as extended train links.

Pretty much, all of the sports themselves were sell-outs.

Of course the costs ended up being much higher than planned, and increases in security costs contributed a lot to that. Olympic stadium and pool costs in the end were also a lot higher than planned.

Hopefully Paris will be as successful.

No Olympic Games since LA 1984 has turned a profit. Barcelona 1992 viewed it as an infrastructure project, not a sporting event, they have the least debt. Most of the stadium for the Olympics and the World Cup in Brazil are gathering weeds.

The IOC has to dealt with a necessary evil to change their gluttonous way. The two remaining bids are from Stockholm and Milano - I hope the Swedes drop out. That way Berlusconi and the boys can drive a hard bargain, the IOC is ripe for a nose bleed.

As much as I hate the IOC and 50 billion $ games , I am with you on this one

Did Calgary think this out?

1 winter olympics are far cheaper than summer

2 are not a lot of the facilities already built? Makes a ton of sense to have the olympics repeat in same city . That is why LA was a proft and they had the expensive summer games . Repeat in Brazil so they can recoup some loses seems a no brainer

3 Toronto or Montreal could host winter games as most games are inside and the downhill could be done in Lake Placid ( 7 hours from Toronto only 2 hours from Montreal) so it would be a joint bid but the IOC has yet to accept a joint bid but may be forced into one. How about Montreal, Toronto and Lake Placid bid? With TV generating most profit why care in games are spread out if it saves $ and spreads the joy and reduces congestion (which is also a cost, is it not?)? Vancouver, Calgary, Salt lake city joint bid? Montreal and Toronto joint bid for summer games makes sense as ceremonies could happen in Montreal as skydome is not big enough.

WTF is up with a one city bid ?

4 It seems to me, the costs of the games are not the real costs which are much lower as most of the $ stays in country which means employment and profit that will be taxed then respent in said country .

5 The games force needed infrastructure to be built so that is not a real cost of the games either

6 $ is recouped in increased Tourism which lasts for years

I agree as I mentioned in my post above, spread the games around the planet where facilities are already in place and there is no need to build infrastructure. Chances are they could host events in cities where that particular sport is popular among the natives and will be received much better.

Hosting in numerous cities would put less burden on having everything hosted in one city, events could be viewed live 24 hours since events would be held across the globe in different time zones. They could even hold the opening and closing ceremonies at different venues.

Yes it would mean that not all athletes are in the same city at the same event, but I am sure that would not put a damper on the games.

The games are global so why not go global?

100% agree

I suspect the IOC is run by bribes and lack of concern for the common man . That is the way of the world, sadly
