BBL; Players are assets. Galvis is a player and a decent piece for some team, they sent him to Cinci and in return they received???? They sent Stroman to the Mets and the return looks suspect, they sent 3 players 2 of which were roster pitchers, to the Astros and got Fisher in return. What did they get for Donaldson? and he isn't doing too bad in Atalanta. Pillar, basically no return and he has a new high in RBI's and is better defensively than pretty much any outfielder currently on the Jays active roster.
That is off the top of my head, I am sure there is more if I wanted to research it.

O.k, So they couldn't trade Galvis at the deadline for various reasons. One, they had to wait to make sure Bo was up and ready, not to mention who knows what was even offered if anything was offered for Galvis. So now that Bo is up and arrived, there's a log jam up the middle and kids are here to play. So they place Galvis on waivers and they'll save million bucks by doing it. It's a no brainer. "Two roster pitchers" two Huston? So they traded away a guy who's a dime a dozen in Biagini, and Sanchez who's one of the worst pitchers in baseball. What were you expecting to get back? We know who won the Stroman deal for a few years. The player they got back for Donaldson is progressing nicely, plus they got cash for him.

What in God's name were you hoping for from Pillar??? He's taking up spot blocking guys like Hernandez and Gurriel who like they will be great bats.

The Jay Happ trade is looking better every day.

This is just off top of my head. We can go all day long. I can rattle through a bunch of bad moves AA made. You guys are way to emotional tied to AA because of the fact he ended a 20 year drought.

BTW, I know what assets are. I was being facetious as I would hardly call these moves "giving away".

Actually, what Shatkins did was a pretty nice favor for Freddy...
From Rosie DiManno in today's Star:

Sources told the Star Galvis attracted no interest at the trade deadline. It's hard to figure what purpose was served by putting him on waiver. Had he cleared them, he would have been a free agent. Atkins claims it was out of respect, giving the player a chance to catch on elsewhere-but the Reds aren't much to write home about either, 5 games out of a wild card. Even if Galvis starts at short every day, which isn't going to happen since Jose Iglesias has started 105 games for Cincy.

The Jays want to spread out Galvis' at-bats among several players including call-ups come September. And the cynic, this cynic, thinks it's likely more about the $1-million buyout on the $5.5-million club option for Galvis' services next year, [/B][/B]which now they don't have to pay because it's been absorbed by the Reds.[/B][/B] "It really wasn't", Atkins insisted. "Money obviously means something, so we could benefit from it in some way, but that didn't factor into the decision."

Right. Such mensches.

Could they become competitive next year if they spend for 2 or 3 meaningful additions to the pitching staff?

I did not say make it to the post season, but competing for it...

Perry
I'd settle for that. My issue has always been the time frame that it looked they were working towards, 7 or 8 years. Next year will be their 5th in charge.

Rougned (the smell of culo) Odor loves playing at the Rogers center.

Are the Shapeyero regime actually doing it right, the team is winning? And the titanic struggle between Vladdy and Aroldis Chapman was for the ages.

... Galvis is a player and a decent piece for some team, they sent him to Cinci and in return they received???? Galvis: the Blue Jays did the player a favour (moved him from 21 games out of the Wild Card to 5.5 out) and provided young Blue Jays players with more opportunity to play without a Galvis-sized obstacle in the way.
Stroman: Marcus's numbers have not exactly set the world on fire in Queens, a 6.10 e.r.a. and 2.03 W.H.I.P.
Return for Stroman: ignoring his 1st start for Buffalo (new organization jitters?) Anthony Kay has 3 starts, 15.1 innings, a 2.87 ERA, 17 Ks, a .233 opposing batting average. Simeon Woods-Richardson: 18K over 3 starts, a win, 3.95 e.r.a., 11.14K/9, remember, he's doing all this at the tender age of 18, playing against a number of players 2-4-5 years his senior.
Pillar: No return? Derek Law, and you already passed judgment on a 21 year old Juan De Paula. Mmmmkay then. Better defensively? Are you sure?
Houston trade: Awfully small sample size to determine W/L on a trade, don't you think?

Research, yes, I highly recommend it.
Donaldson: There has been no return (on the field) as of now.....Donaldson wasn't doing much either while here in 2018 either.

What did they get for Happ? Sogaard? We lost on the Osuna for Giles trade. Edwin is in the same category as Donaldson. They might have been able to do a sign and trade with both.

All water under the bridge. They have an exciting core, but that is only 4 players.
You want a 2019 version of J.A. Happ? WHY?
The 2 players Toronto got in return are both on the 25 man roster, contributing to varying degrees.
J.A. Happ & Billy McKinney have the same W.A.R. this season (0.1), Brandon Drury has 0.7 W.A.R. this season.
Sogard: We should know shortly. What'd the Jays give up? A 33 year old having an outlier season, big deal.
Osuna: How did the Blue Jays lose in that trade? Don't say because Giles is injured, that's unforeseeable.
Giles has been everything the Blue Jays could've asked for, when healthy. And, he's not an abuser of women.
You've passed judgment on (23 Yr old) Pitching Prospect Hector Perez already?
That's one fine crystal ball you got there, mister!

Sign and trade? WHAT?

So, they've been here (at end of season) for 4 years.
They haven't been building their team for that long, as explained upthread, they spent the 1st 3 years cleaning up the mess A.A. left.
This year, 2019, is truly the 1st year of the rebuild. Spin whatever you want, however you want. This is fact.

Taken from Twitter:

In the past two calendar months (June 13th - August 13th),
the Toronto Blue Jays have
the 4th highest wRC+ in MLB,
scored the 3rd most runs,
have hit the 2nd most home runs.

They have a BABIP of exactly .300 in that span.

All I can say is thank god I got costanza on here. Someone with baseball I.q as high as mine.(if not higher).

You guys are way to emotionally attached to AA because he ended a 20 year drought and he’s Canadian.

Your just not looking at things objectively, not to mention way to prematurely.

Most of you guys don’t even realize that most Toronto fans didn’t even like the J.D for laurie trade in and be beginning. You can’t evaluate a trade until at least a year later if not more.

Mean while, the kids are tearing it up, but ya’ll still want the current management out. SMH

I mentioned these guys mainly because Dawgger asked who else was traded.

Happ was traded last year and his value was much higher then. He was one of the top pitchers available at the time. McKinney and, to a lesser extent, Drury are space fillers. Probably a money saver for Toronto.
Osuna: I suspect most GMs would choose him over Giles looking forward. Giles is quite good, but I think Osuna is a more valuable commodity. And there is no certainty they will keep Giles after this year. He is doubtful that they want him back. Giles injury is a non-factor since as you say, unforeseeable. I did not consider Perez as I was simply looking at closer for closer. Looked up his stats for this year at AA ball. 4.70 ERA and 1.661 WHIP. No crystal ball was necessary to look up recent recorded history.
Sogard: No big deal either way. He won't be missed and highly doubtful they will get anything significant other than saving money.

When I said "sign and trade" it was not in the basketball sense but holding onto, IMO, two very good, high profile and very professional role model players who could be traded later for some decent value instead of letting them both walk for nothing whatsoever. Keep in mind EE went 2 years before JD and 3 before Vlady arrived, so there was time to get rid of a possible 3B/1B/DH logjam, although dumping Smoak's sorry ass would have solved that.

Question: Do you think the Jays maxed out or even got significantly ahead on the returns they got for Stroman, Sanchez/Biagini, JD, Happ, Osuna, EE? Would you give them more than a "C" grade for what they got back for the talent that they had at their disposal? I know you are defending management and don't like my criticism of their management style, but how excited were you at the times these trades were made? Were there any "wows" for you?

They saved a tonne of salary (even with the Giles acquisition), that's for sure. Unfortunately, I believe that that is more than offset by the lost revenue.

All we need is a couple if quality starting pitchers, and we're set for next year.

Hopefully Rogers will spend some money on free agents this winter

Galvis...I don't get how Jays management did him a favor. Reds are not at .500 and are unlikely to make the playoffs as a wildcard. They did themselves a favor by freeing up playing time for the young guns. Stop the bullshit, it was a business decision not a favor for a player.
Looked at MLB top 100 prospects 3 Blue Jays listed, Bichette @ #8, Pearson #14 and Groshans#72.

Are the Reds likely to make the playoffs? No. Do they have a much better chance than Toronto? Yes.
Was Galvis going to play much in Toronto over the rest of the season? No.
Business? Yes, a favour as well? Yes.
There are 30 teams in MLB. On average each team would have 3.33 prospects in the Top 100 rankings.
Toronto has brought a number of players up from their farm system this season, no wonder their total is slightly below the 3.33.

I'm really not sure where to start ....

Happ: had a 3.0 W.A.R. in 2018, was a pending F.A., Toronto got 2 capable pieces in exchange.
Would you have rather had Happ this season (and be committed to him for 2020) as the Yankees are? No, thank you.
Giles/Perez, Perez is still only 23. Still lots of time to figure things out. Osuna was a toxic situation. He was not going to play for Toronto again.
The Blue Jays did well, getting a quality closer in exchange, and a lottery ticket.
E.E. and J.D. did not "walk for nothing". J.D. returned Julien Merryweather (just 1 outing this season).....but Donaldson was injured at the time as well. I'm not sure what else Toronto could've done with E.E., they offered more money and more term than Cleveland did. Edwin's agent outsmarted himself in that situation.
"Justin Smoak's sorry ass" you say?
He has the 3rd highest O.B.P. on the club, and plays a terrific 1st base.
He saves his young infield mates many an error.
As far as the Sanchez/Biagini/Prospect for Fisher trade, they obviously see something in Fisher, have stated they'd been after him for a couple years. Sanchez? Who knows what is still there? Biagini, is a decent reliever, and who knows with the prospect? If the Astros straighten Sanchez out, I think they win the trade going away, unless Fisher turns into Mookie Betts or J.D. Martinez. No matter how the Houston trade works out, it won't be the worst Blue Jays/Astros trade in history.

I'm not "defending management", but I can safely sit here and say Shapiro (not Shapeeeeero) and Atkins have forgotten more about baseball than anyone on this thread has ever known.
As far as grading them, baseball is a rather unique sport in that it tends to take 2-3-5 or more years to figure out who "won" a trade, especially when trading established players for prospects. I reserve judgment.

I'm sure Costanza already beat me to this, but Osuna had to go due to his legal issues and the type of town this is. He was never going to be forgiven here and know as women beater. We offered Edwin the best deal and dumb ass agent gave him bad advice and turned it down.

Not this winter. To early. They'll wait a little closer to the trade deadline, but the big splash will come after next year. Once these kids have a little more experience and they also have a better idea of what they have.
