In today's world of big league sports could a successful coach in one league be able to make the jump and coach in a completely different league?

With all leagues using numerous specialty coaches the role of a head coach/manager is to manage all of those personnel. The role also requires someone who can manage ego's, which takes a certain amount of leadership skills. The role also demands that a coach has the ability to read people in different situations and make calls based on his ability to read people in the moment.

The X's and O's may not factor in as much for head coaches/managers these days.

Example - Could a Babcock be successful in baseball? A Gibbons successful in hockey?

Probably not at an elite level, however, the coach of my high school baseball and hockey teams was the same person.

Not related to your question but here is an interesting trivia question: Which woman won medals in both the women's and men's bobsleigh competitions?

Could they? absolutely. The organizational and people management side is the same; the specific skills and strategies would need to be learned. I have heard of high level coaches routinely discussing things with other coaches in other fields.

Would they? I doubt it. I can't see why an elite coach would give up their multi-million dollar gig to work their way up from assistant coach in another sport.

My high school gym teacher also taught math. He was totally incompetent in math. If a high school team loses every game it doesn't cost the company tons of money in revenue so who cares. Professional sports is big business so that's where it matters. High school? Forget it.

Although some of the management skills of elite coaches are the same across different sports the technical knowledge required to develop strategies is different as are the skills required to make in game adjustments at the professional level.
Also professional sports teams are multi million dollar businesses that are risk adverse so they are not going to hire a coach with zero experience.
