Reputable Roofing Company Needed

Now that my insurance claim is resolved and the repair work done and the back porch has been powerwashed, stained and the railings replaced I need to fix my garage roof.

The problem is some overhanging branches (I live in an older neighbourhood that has mature trees) keep brushing it every bad windstorm, which we had a few of this year (e.g. effects of Hurricane Florence, etc.), knocking off shingles, so they'll have to be replaced and the branches cut. I was going to leave it but Locogp40 told me during our social outing that if I wait the underlying plywood could get wet and then I'd be faced with the bigger problem of fixing the whole roof. I had a client that does roofing lined up earlier in the year to clean my eavestroughs, which leak in two different places, but he bailed and the topic was never visited again. I'm thinking of putting all new eavestroughs on both the house and garage. Thankfully the house roof is fine as it must have been done by a previous owner more recently.

This is the last of my outdoor projects for the year as I already have a snow removal company lined up. I'll start focusing on the inside of the house again once this is completed. In the meantime, any recommendations for roofers is greatly appreciated!

Sincerely,
Sophia

I don't know any and I know I don't have to tell you but please make sure you check references and google the crap out of the company.

Water is a house a killer. It can do so much damage so make sure you get the best you can so you don't have to worry about issues from shotty work.

The problem with small repairs is they are expensive. Contractors prefer large jobs they can bill for the whole day or days. They hate small projects, as it presents schedule problems, logistics, delivery of parts and people.
So don’t expect cheaper just because it’s a little repair.
Or, a handyman type might be better the a full roofing contractor.
Good luck.

$500 is the minimum, if they come at all. I asked the roofer if he wanted referrals. He said no, way too busy to bother with new clients. In fact, he tried to convince me that a small leak is no problem---its only water. Talk about downselling!

For tree services:
Davey Tree Care Services http://www.daveytree.ca/local-offices/mississauga-tree-service/

For eaves:
I used a guy this summer, but would have to go dig his card up. Let me know if you want the name.
Although fairly young and an independent, this guy was amazing. Great workmanship, prices, installed better hanging system and leaf guard. Offered lots of good advice.

For roofing:
Deluca Roofing http://delucaroofing.ca/
Alpine Roofing: www.alpineroofing.ca

Disclosure: I used Deluca about 10 years ago for roof and flashing replacement - Excellent job. About 5 years ago for some repairs (due to fire next door) - more good work. However I just looked at some online reviews and they are pretty weak
My two neighbours used Alpine 5 years ago and both were very happy. Again recent mediocre reviews.
All our roofs survived the summer wind storm with no problems.

The problem with this business is it's very competitive and the owners are forced to use "transient" lower-cost labourers to do the work. The crew typically has a supervisor with a little more experience, but quality suffers. I realize it's just a garage roof, but quality work is still important, especially where the garage joins the house.

With the recent wind storm a ton of "home handymen" started advertising as roofers to chase the easy money. Roof repairs aren't rocket science, but there is more knowledge required to do a full roof (flashing, drip edge, sealing for pipes and vents, ice/water shield, etc) and your warranty is only as good as the quality of the installation and if the installers are still in business 2 years later.

Thank you Promo! You gave me great advice in the past re: basement window replacement.

I would love the independent's contact information as he'll likely be more willing to take on a smaller job than the bigger companies. I'll clear a spot in my Inbox.

I find that some longstanding businesses sell their name and reputation to a new owner who doesn't hold the same standards. This could be another explanation for the downgrade in reviews.

P.S. The old school garage is separate from the house and made from real 2 x 4's.

Now that my insurance claim is resolved and the repair work done and the back porch has been powerwashed, stained and the railings replaced I need to fix my garage roof.

Glad the water damage claim worked out. Been there on 2 occasions. Atm I’m just finishing a power surge claim as a result of transformer exploding due to lighting strike directly behind my property. Still not clear if it was the initial strike or the 2x replacing the transformer by hydro. I was away on that weekend. I must say the adjuster has been fantastic! My general take is not all insurance companies are bad. Previous exsperience with Aviva was a nightmare.

I have now installed whole home surge protector and highly recommend this to all home owners.

I am curious as too how your water damage occurred. Was it from a storm? Perhaps the garage roof could have been included in your claim?

The insurance claim regarded the inside of my house and happened in early July https://terb.cc/vbulletin/showthread.php?644767-Insurance-Question(s). This is a totally separate issue and is due to wind/bad weather and age, not water.

I don't think there is any harm in sharing it publically. If it disappears I'll PM you the info.

Good point re selling of name and reputation - I didn't think of that.

Good luck with the project(s).
